Wolves Finish 1-1 in Tri-Match with Georgia College and Francis Marion

FLORENCE, SC – Wolves finish 1-1 in Tri-Match with Georgia College and Francis Marion.
 

GAME ONE OVERVIEW: NEWBERRY VS GEORGIA COLLEGE

SCORE: Newberry Wolves 0, Georgia College Bobcats 3 (25-20, 25-14, 27-25)

RECORDS: Newberry (2-5), Georgia College (5-5)

LOCATION: Pearl Moore Basketball Center – Florence, SC

RECAP: Newberry Volleyball falls 3-0 after a tight overtime loss vs. Georgia College

 

HIGHLIGHTS:

  • The Bobcats got set up with a quick 10-5 lead in set one, after back to back kills along with a service ace.

  • Newberry chipped away at the Bobcats' lead, narrowing it down to 8-12 after a service ace from Annie Dill.

  • Georgia College took off from this point, scoring seven unanswered points, 19-8.

  • The Wolves fought back with a 10-1 run of their own. Samantha Shaffer was prevalent in this run with three kills in four straight points, assisted by Dill and Katy Morrison. 18-20.

  • The Bobcats were able to stop the bleeding holding the Wolves to only two more points before closing set one, 25-20.

  • The Bobcats didn't slow their roll, taking a huge 8-0 lead to start set two.

  • After kills from Shaffer and Emma Christensen the Wolves were able to begin chipping away at their deficit.

  • Georgia College was able to quickly stop this momentum, creating a 15-3 gap.

  • Reaching the end of set two the Bobcats led 21-7, until Newberry created a small run of their own, lessening their lead to 21-14.

  • The Bobcats were able to close out set two, 25-14.

  • Newberry started set three down 9-3. They were able to climb back and tie the game at 13-13 after a kill from Madison Watson, assisted by Giovanna Ravanhani.

  • With three straight kills from Kate Brown, Watson, and Dill, the Wolves were able to get their first lead of set three, 16-15.

  • The set stayed tight, being tied at 22 a piece.

  • After another kill by Christensen, the Wolves tied the game at 25-25, forcing overtime.

  • The Bobcats were able to score two points straight, winning set three 27-25, and closing out the match 3-0.

GAME TWO OVERVIEW: NEWBERRY VS FRANCIS MARION

SCORE: Newberry Wolves 3, Francis Marion Patriots 1

RECORDS: Newberry (3-5), Francis Marion (1-8)

LOCATION: Pearl Moore Basketball Center – Florence, SC

RECAP: Newberry bounces back in game two vs. host Francis Marion. Setters Dill and Ravanhani, both combined for over 40 assists, and Anna Schneider led the game with 13 kills.

 

HIGHLIGHTS:

  • The Wolves jumped out to a quick 8-6 lead after a kill by Christensen, off a set from Ravanhani.

  • Pushing their lead up 14-9, the Wolves piled on another point after a dump from Ravanhani.

  • Brown got herself on the board with a kill late in the set bumping the Wolves lead to 19-15.

  • Schneider stayed hot and ended set one after a service ace, 25-20.

  • Newberry got off to another strong start taking an 11-6 lead early in set two.

  • The Patriots managed to gain some ground tying the game at 16-16.

  • Things stayed tight later in the set with Newberry up 21-19.

  • After a kill from Shaffer and multiple attack errors from the Patriots, Newberry took set two 25-21.

  • Roles were reversed at the start of set three with Francis Marion taking a 14-8 lead.

  • The Wolves spent the rest of the set trying to climb back from their deficit, and they managed to get within four points of the Patriots as the set was winding down, 14-18.

  • The Patriots held strong and kept Newberry down to win set three 25-19, forcing a fourth set.

  • Newberry started off the game with back to back kills from Gabby Warren, giving the Wolves a 5-3 lead.

  • The Wolves held a small lead, until they broke off from the competition, going on an 8-4 run and leading the Patriots, 16-11.

  • The Wolves set their eyes on the prize after this, and with kills from the likes of Christensen, Brown, Schneider and Watson, they closed out set four 25-17, ending the match.
