Track and Field Earns 9 Medals at SAC Outdoor Championships

HICKORY, N.C. – The Newberry College men's and women's track and field teams competed at the South Atlantic Conference Championships on Wednesday and Thursday. The men's team took home a fourth-place overall finish with 75 points, and the women were ninth with 24.

In all, the Wolves brought home four gold medals, two silver medals and three bronzes.

Three-time SAC WePlayed Sports Outdoor Field Athlete of the Week winner Kegan Crowell won two events this week – the hammer throw and discus. In the hammer throw, Crowell heaved it 51.46 meters (168 feet, 10 inches) to beat teammate Parker Pitts' 50.30-meter throw (165 feet) in second.

Crowell threw it 53.88 meters (176 feet, 9 inches) to win the discus event by nearly 15 feet. As of this writing, Crowell is 12th in Division II for discus thanks to his throw at the Catamount Classic last month.

Sean Price took home gold in the javelin throw with a 57.67-meter effort (189 feet, 2 inches) and won by over seven feet.

Joining Price and Crowell in the win column was Rahyme Christian. Christian ran the 110m hurdles in 14.24 seconds.

Andrea Pascual Rivera earned a second-place finish for the Newberry women in the hammer throw. Pascual Rivera had a throw of 50.78 meters (166 feet, 7 inches) for her second consecutive silver in the category at the SAC Outdoor Championships.

Leonie Samuels finished third in two events – discus and shot put. In discus, Samuels set a new personal record at 37.69 meters (123 feet, 8 inches). For shot put, her throw was 13.39 meters (43 feet, 11 ¼ inches).

Also of note on the men's side was the 400m hurdle event that saw Rashaad George earn bronze in 53.18 seconds with Landon Tucker a spot behind him (53.36 seconds).

The Wolves will compete next Friday and Saturday (May 10 and 11) at Lenoir-Rhyne's Last Chance Weekend in Hickory.
