PEMBROKE, N.C. – On Saturday afternoon at the UNC Pembroke Braves Classic, the Newberry College Track and Field team won a combined six events – four on the men's side and two on the women's.
Tyler Shumate dominated the men's 1500-meter run in 4:12.49 to win by over three seconds.
Kevin Kipkosgei also put on a clinic in the 5000m event as he clocked in at 16:35.05, 17 seconds ahead of the pack.
Larry Scott won the men's 800m dash with a time of 2:00.63. Rounding out the triumphant day for the men was
Shamar Brown in the 400m hurdles. Brown's effort set a new personal-best at 54.47 seconds.
Justin Canty (49.70 seconds) finished second in the 400m dash.
For the Newberry women, freshman
Kayleigh Geel earned her first solo collegiate win by placing first in the 800m event in 2:31.65. Joining Geel in the win column was the 4x400m relay team of Shaunajah Davis,
Brittany Montgomery,
Sarah Abumere and
Mia Dionisio. Their winning time was 4:26.43.
Dionisio added a second-place showing in the 400m dash (1:01.36),
Sage Bowen was second in the 800m race (2:37.04) and
Alaya Lindquist also finished second in the 1500m run with a time of 5:04.88.
The Wolves return to action with a pair of meets next week: the Duke Invitational in Durham, North Carolina, on April 11-13, and the Sharonda Coleman-Singleton Classic on April 13 hosted by South Carolina State in Orangeburg.
