NEWBERRY – The Newberry baseball team (17-19, 11-8 SAC) fell to tie Lenoir-Rhyne (23-15, 10-9 SAC) by a 7-4 final score Friday evening at the Smith Rd. Complex.
The Wolves battled back from down 4-1 to tie the game up in the bottom of the eighth at 4-4 on some timely two out rbis.
Henry Gibson,
Donovan Ford, and
Luke Compton each had multiple hits that drove in runs in the contest.
The Bears got out ahead early with two runs in the top of the first with a rbi single and double to take the early 2-0 lead.
The Wolves would use two clutch two-out hits from
Jomar Lugo and Ford as Lugo would reach with an infield bunt single to break up the L-R starter's perfect game. Ford would drive in Lugo with an RBI double in the left-center field gap to cut the Bear lead to 2-1.
The Bears would add two more runs in the fourth and six innings to make it 4-1. The Wolves would respond with another clutch two out single from Gibson that would bring in two runs to cut the Bears lead to one run.
Two innings later, the Wolves would tie it up in the bottom of the eighth with another two-out rbi single to right field from Compton.
The Bears would get three runs in the ninth from two, two-out rbi singles to re-gain the lead and hold on to a 7-4 win.
The two teams will be back at the Smith Rd. Complex tomorrow for a double header to finish the three-game set. The first pitch of game one will be at 1:00 p.m.
