Double Header Sweep Lifts the Wolves To a Series Win over L-R

NEWBERRY - After falling to the Bears 7-4 last night, the Newberry College baseball team (19-19, 13-8 SAC) would sweep Lenoir-Rhyne (23-17, 10-11 SAC) in a Saturday double header winning game one 12-11 and game two 7-4.
 
Junior outfielder Donovan Ford was perfect from the plate going 7-7 with two RBIs in the double header. Wolves would get key outings on the mound from Tyler Chinpire, Ethan LeBron, and Wyatt Carey. Chinpire would collect the win in game one as he would go two innings in relief with a strike out and allowing no runs. Ethan LeBron would go five innings in his game two start to earn the win while striking out three bears. With bases loaded an no outs in the top of the seventh in game two, senior south paw Wyatt Carey would come in and get the save with two strikeouts in an inning pitched.
 
Game One
The Wolves would come back from down 9-3 to win game one on a walk off wild pitch by a 12-11 final score.
 
The Bears and Wolves would exchange three runs in the first inning off of a three-run home run in the top of the first to give the Bears a 3-0 start.
 
The Wolves would answer with Ford leading off with a single. In the following at-bat Ford would advance to third on a errant pick off attempt from the Lenior-Rhyne pitcher. Ford would score on a rbi infield single from Keillor Osbon to cut the Lenoir-Rhyne lead to 3-1. Two batters later, Osbon would score off a single from Henry Gibson to cut the Bear lead to 3-2.  Two-batters later, with two outs, Jesse Free would drive in Gibson to tie the game up at 3-3.
 
The Bears would score six runs in the second and third to take a 9-3 lead.
 
The Wolves would start their battle back, as Ford would get hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to start a rally in the bottom of the fourth. On the next at-bat, Luke White would score on a wild pitch to make it 9-5. Then the Wolves would score three straight runs on three straight at-bats as Osbon would get an RBI groundout to make it 9-6. On the next at-bat, Luke Compton would drive in Ford with a single to left field to make it 9-7. Compton would score on the next at-bat with a double to right center field from Gibson to cut the Bear lead to one run.
 
The Bears would answer for the last time in game one with a run scored in the fifth and eighth to make it 11-8.
 
Compton would get his second rbi of the game with a sacrifice fly to score Bryson Nuckols to make it 11-9.
 
Tyler Chinpire would get himself out of a jam in the top of the ninth as he would pick off a runner on second with one out and struck out a Bear to send the Wolves to the bottom of the ninth with two to tie and three to win.
 
The Wolves would show discipline at the plate as Kade Faircloth, and K.J Leshko would force back-to-back walks to start the bottom of the ninth. On the next at-bat, Luke White would reach on a bunt single to the pitcher to load the bases up with no outs. With Jacob LeBron to pinch hit, Faircloth would score on a wild pitch while the tying and winning run would move up to second and third. LeBron would reach on a walk to re-load the bases up for Nuckols. Nuckols would get hit by a pitch to bring in a tying run for the top of the order. With Ford at the plate, the first pitch would get by the catcher and pinch runner Brody Winter would go without hesitation to score the game winning run on a walk off wild pitch to make it 12-11.
 
Game One Stats
  • Donovan Ford went 4-4 with a double, RBI and two runs scored on the game one win. Ford's four hit performance notched the most hits in a game by any Wolf this season.
  • The top of the Order (Ford, Keillor Osbon, Luke Compton, and Henry Gibson) drove in seven of the Wolves 12 runs
  • The Wolves had three doubles as a team which ties a season high.
 
Game Two
In a game with three ties and lead changes, the Wolves would get the last lead in a 7-4 game two victory to clinch the double header sweep.
 
The Bears would score a run on a sacrifice fly in the opening half inning to take a 1-0 lead.
 
The Wolves would answer in the bottom of the first as they would tie the game up on a successful double steal that would cause an errant throw by the catcher to score Ford to tie it at one. On the same at-bat Luke Compton would drive in Jacob LeBron to give the Wolves a 2-1 lead.
 
The Bears would score a run in the second and third inning to regain a 3-2 lead.
 
Compton would tie the game back up at three with a rbi ground out to first that would score Ford.
 
The Wolves would extend their lead in the bottom of the fifth to 5-3 as Jacob LeBron would hit a rbi groundout followed by Ford scoring on a wild pitch on the next at-bat.
 
In the next inning, the Wolves would add more insurance runs as Chandler Mims would walk with the bases loaded, followed by a rbi single from Ford to give the Wolves a 7-3 lead.
 
The Bears would threaten to tie the game up in the top of the seventh with the bases loaded and no outs. With those bases loaded and no outs, Carey would get the first out with a fielder's choice that would score one run to make it 7-4. To secure the save, Carey struck out the next two batters to end the game and give the Wolves a 7-4 win to secure the double header sweep.
Game Two Stats
  • Ford would have three of the Wolves five hits on the game two victory with a run driven in.
  • Ethan LeBron would throw five innings, striking out three batters and allowing two earned runs to secure his fourth win of the season.
  • Wyatt Carey would enter the game facing a jam and get save number four with back-to-back strikeouts.
