CULLOWHEE, N.C. – The Newberry College track and field team took home four winners' trophies over Friday and Saturday at the Catamount Classic hosted by Western Carolina. In addition, the Wolves had second-place finishes in four events, and two third-places.
Among the winners on the men's side was
Kegan Crowell in discus for his third win of the outdoor season. Crowell set a new Newberry record at 54.17 meters (177 feet, 9 inches), more than 16 feet ahead of his competition. Crowell is atop the South Atlantic Conference Outdoor Performance List and sits 11th in Division II at the time of this writing.
Sean Price won the javelin throw with a 60.04m effort (197 feet) for a new career-best mark. Price's throw was nearly 10 feet in front of second place.
Rahyme Christian picked up his first victory as a Wolf in the 110m hurdles in 14.02 seconds. Christian's time is good for second on the SAC Outdoor Performance List and places him 16th in DII as of this writing.
For the Newberry women,
Leonie Samuels won her second shot put event this outdoor season. Samuels' 13.03m throw (42 feet, 9 inches) won by 1 foot, 3 inches.
Andrea Pascual Rivera placed third in the hammer throw at 49.76m (163 feet, 3 inches) for a podium finish.
Earning a second-place result in the 400m hurdles was
Landon Tucker (55.25 seconds), and hot on his heels only one one-hundredth of a second behind was Rashaad George. Both Tucker and George set new personal-bests in the event.
Joining the silver medal fray were both the 4x100m and 4x400m relay teams for the Wolves. The 4x100 team consisted of
Jalen Crumpton, Christian,
Davison Wright and
Kalyn Cook who ran it in 41.18 seconds. The 4x400 team included
Shamar Brown,
Tavarian Thompson, Tucker and
Justin Canty with a time of 3:21.50.
Steven Phan cleared the 3.70m bar (12 feet, 1 ½ inches) to also finish second in the pole vault.
Newberry continues its outdoor season with a final tune-up before the SAC Championships at the App State Open at Appalachian State this Friday and Saturday (April 26 and 27) in Boone, North Carolina.
