Wolves Sweep Saints, Clinching Series Win in Walk off Fashion.

NEWBERRY – The Newberry College baseball team (21-21, 15-9 SAC), swept the Saints of Limestone University (19-23, 9-14 SAC) in Saturday's double header winning game one 6-3, and game two in walk off fashion 8-7. The double header sweep gave Newberry their sixth straight conference series win of the season.
 
Luke Compton drove in five runs in the afternoon twibill. Donovan Ford went 4-8, extending his hitting streak to 22 games. Junior right-hander Hunter French went eight innings, to get the win in game one. Freshman righty John Rollings went four innings in relief to get his first career win in game two.
 
Game One.
After trailing 3-0 going into the third, the Wolves' bats would come alive and score six unanswered runs to take game one by a 6-3 final.
 
The Saints would score two in the top of the first with a rbi single and fielder's choice to make it 2-0. In the top of the second, the Saints would extend their lead to 3-0 on a long ball.
 
In the bottom of the third, the Wolves would get a rally going as Luke White would start the inning off with a lead off walk. Ford would move White to second with a single through the left side. With runners on first and second, Jacob LeBron would reach base with a walk to load them up for Luke Compton. Compton would hit a single to right, scoring White and Ford to get his first two RBIs to cut the Saints lead to 3-2. On the next at-bat, Henry Gibson would score LeBron to tie the game up at 3 on a RBI sacrifice bunt.
 
In the next inning, Compton would add two more RBIs as he would ground out to first driving in White, but an errant throw by the first baseman trying to turn two would score Ford to give the Wolves a 5-3 lead.
 
 In the bottom of the sixth, Compton would get his fifth RBI with a single to score LeBron to make it 6-3.
After giving up three runs in the first two innings, junior right-hander Hunter French would settle in going eight innings striking out two batters to get the win improving to 5-2.
 
Game One Numbers
  • Newberry's 1-2-3 hitters (Donovan Ford, Jacob LeBron, and Luke Compton) went a combined 9-14 with five RBIs and four runs scored.
  • Senior right hander Devin Makovsky earned his first career save sending the Saints down in order to close out game one.
  • French and Makovsky found the strike zone, allowing no walks in the game one victory.
Game Two.
In game two, the Wolves came back to win in dramatic fashion as the would walk off the Saints in the bottom of the seventh to clinch their sixth straight conference series win.
 
The Wolves would strike first in game two as Donovan Ford would lead off with a triple to the left center field gap. Jacob LeBron would drive in Ford with a sacrifice fly to right to put the Wolves on the board 1-0.
 
The Saints would tie the game back up with a run in the second inning with a sac fly.
 
In the bottom of the second, the Wolves would answer. Henry Gibson would lead off the inning with an infield single. After Gibson advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt. With a 2-1 count and one out in the inning, Jesse Free would hit his first career home run at the Smith Rd. Complex to give the Wolves a 3-1 lead.
 
In the top of the third, Limestone would answer with six runs to take a 7-3 lead.
 
After giving up six in the top of the third, the Wolves would start to creep their way back into the game starting with a rbi groundout from Kade Faircloth in the bottom of the fourth to cut the Saint lead to 7-4.
Two innings later, the Wolves would score two runs on wild pitches to make it a 7-6 game going into the final frame.
 
In the bottom of the seventh, the Wolves would load the bases with walks from Ford, LeBron and a pinch hit walk from Jomar Lugo to load the bases up with one out for Henry Gibson. With a 1-1 count, Gibson would rip a single over the left fielder's head to score Ford and LeBron to send the Wolves home with a 8-7 victory.
 
Game Two Numbers
  • Gibson was the lone Wolf with multiple hits and RBIs in the game two win.
  • With Donovan Ford's Stolen Base in the seventh, he's tied Braylin Marine for second all-time in career stolen bases with 79.
  • John Rollings went four innings in relief, not allowing a run and striking out two Saints to earn his first career win.

The Wolves will go to Florence for a neutral site non-conference game with the tenth ranked Trojans of Mount Olive Tuesday afternoon. The first pitch will be at 3:00 p.m. from CarolinaBank Field.
