FLORENCE, S.C. – The Newberry College baseball team (19-20, 13-8 SAC) fell to the no. 10 ranked Trojans of the University of Mount Olive (29-8, 17-3 CC) 7-4 Wednesday afternoon in Carolina Bank Field in Florence.
Junior third baseman
Jesse Free went 2-2 at the plate with two rbis.
The Wolves trailed 3-0 going into the bottom of the eighth before putting up a four spot to take a 4-3 lead going into the ninth.
In the bottom of the eighth,
Donovan Ford led off the inning with a single to center field.
Luke Compton and
Hunter French would draw walks to load the bases for freshman outfielder
Keillor Osbon. Osbon would hit a single through the left side to score a run and make it 3-1. On the next at-bat,
Bryson Nuckols would get hit by a pitch to bring in Compton to cut the Trojan lead to 3-2. With two outs and the bases loaded, Free would give the Wolves a 4-3 lead on a single up the middle that would score Osbon and French.
In the top of the ninth, the Trojans would score four runs to take a 7-4 lead to hold on for the win.
