Wolves Split Double Header with the Cobras.

NEWBERRY – The Newberry College baseball team (6-15, 2-6 SAC) split a double header with the Cobras of Coker University (14-7, 8-3 SAC) winning the first game 2-1 and falling in the second game 5-3.
 
Freshman utility Keillor Osbon came up with some big hits in both games, going 3-5 at the dish in both contests for the Wolves.
 
Game One
The Wolves took game one by a 2-1 pitchers dual. The Wolves would get a clutch pinch hit single from Osbon in the top of the eighth to give the Wolves a 2-1 lead.
 
The Wolves would strike first starting with Jacob LeBron ripping a two out double in the top of the first. Two-batters later, Bryson Nuckols would drive LeBron home with a single to left field to make it 1-0.
 
After Coker would tie it up in the bottom of the first, the Wolves starter Hunter French would settle in, as he threw seven innings as he struck out three batters to earn the win.
 
In the eighth, LeBron would start the second rally of the day as he would reach on a bunt single to third. Two batters later, Osbon's number would get called with LeBron on second from a balk. Osbon would deliver with a single through the right side to score LeBron and give the Wolves a 2-1 lead.
 
In the next half inning, Brayden Gilson would come in with no outs and runners on first and second. Gilson would go 1-2-3, ending the eighth without allowing a run.
 
In the ninth, Gilson would finish the game earning his second save of the season with back-to-back strikeouts to give the Wolves a game one 2-1 victory.
 
Game One Stats.
  • LeBron would go 2-4 scoring both runs in the game for the Wolves.
  • Hunter French threw 7 IP striking out three batters.
  • Gilson finished the game with a two-inning save striking out three Cobras.
Game Two
The Wolves would fall in a back-and-forth contest with the Cobras in game two by a 5-3 score.
 
The Wolves would strike first with two RBI singles from LeBron and Osbon to give the Wolves a 2-0 lead.
 
Coker would take their first lead of the doubleheader with three runs in the bottom of the third, taking a 3-2 lead.
 
The Wolves would tie the game up in the top of the fourth with a single from Luke Compton scoring Donovan Ford on an error by the right fielder.
 
But the Cobras would score two runs in the fifth and hold on to a 5-3 final score.
 
Game Two Stats.
  • LeBron would reach on three of his four plate appearances as he went 2-3 with a rbi.
  • Luke Compton and Keillor Osbon would also add two hit performances in game two along with a rbi for each.
Up Next
The two teams will play the rubber match on Sunday at Hartsville. The first pitch will be scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
