Wolves Secure Series Win over Cobras

HARTSVILLE, S.C. – The Newberry College baseball team (7-15, 3-6 SAC) scored four runs in both the second and the eighth inning en route to a 13-5 three-game series clinching victory over the Cobras of Coker University (14-8, 8-4 SAC).

Sophomore infielder Chandler Mims went 2-5 with four RBIs on the afternoon including a three-run double in the eighth inning. The Wolves pitchers did a good job of keeping the ball on the ground, forcing 20 ground outs in the nine innings.

The Wolves got their scoring started as Donovan Ford hit a rbi single to right field to get the Wolves on the board, taking a 1-0 lead. On the next at-bat, Luke Compton would reach on a fielder's choice to extend the lead to 2-0. On the next at-bat, Jacob LeBron would reach on a fielder's choice that would score Jomar Lugo and Ford to make it 4-0.

The Cobras would score two in the bottom half of the inning to make it 4-2. In the top of the fourth, LeBron would have a successful squeeze attempt as he would score Ford on a sacrifice bunt to the pitcher to make it 5-2.

The Wolves would add on to the lead as Mims would get his first of four RBIs on an rbi single to make it 6-2 in the top of the fifth. On the next at-bat, the Wolves would wreak havoc on the basepaths as Rhett Jolly would score on an errant throw from the catcher as Mims would steal second to make it 7-2.

After the Cobras would score a run in the fifth and sixth to make it 7-4, the Wolves would add two more with a two-run double from Hunter French to extend the lead to 9-4.

The Cobras would answer with a run in the bottom of the seventh to make it 9-5, but the Wolves would add some insurance in the eighth. In the top of the eighth, the Wolves would add four more runs starting with a LeBron run off of a Wild Pitch to make it 10-5. On the next at-bat with the bases loaded, Mims would rip a double down the left field line to score three and put the Wolves lead at 13-5.

After the four run eighth, the Wolves would shut down the Cobras, securing the series win with a 13-5 final score.
