NEWBERRY, S.C. - Women's lacrosse loses their first conference game against #16 Wingate 6-17.
In in tight first half, the Wolves trailed Bulldogs 2-4 at the end of the first period.
Jadie Burns was the first to find the net for Newberry, on a man-up free position shot. The other half of the duo,
Trysten Burns finished off the scoring half for the Wolves.
Marissa Plumer set herself up for a free position shot, rather than taking it, she found
Trysten Burns creeping around the crease. Quickly getting the pass off, Burns was able to dump it in the net before the goalie could react, earning Plumer and herself a point. Defensively, a whole pack of Wolves caused some commotion for the Bulldogs offense. Captain

Morgan Parsons,
Julia Zayachkowsky and Plumer all caused a turnover for the Newberry. Additionally, the ground ball game was key in the period as the Wolves picked up five, out performing the Bulldog's three.
The second period was cleaner for Newberry. Although still trailing, the Wolves were more competitive, scoring three. Starting off the period hot,
Serena Elias won the starting draw control for the Wolves. After a shot attempt from
Cassell Richardson, Plumer dished off an assist to Elias, giving #4 a solid statistical sequence.
Heather Johnston got on the board for Newberry seven minutes later off a feed from T Burns. Burns, at goal line extended (GLE) was able to draw the double time as she attacked, leaving Johnston open and driving towards the goal, putting the Wolves back within one goal. The name goalies are becoming all too familiar with,
Ella Todd let it rip on a free position shot, putting her on the board with two minutes left in the half. New transfer goalie
Cheyenne Jess came in big for the Wolves this period, saving an impressive seven shots. Among these shots were two door step stuffers, giving the Wolves some much needed momentum. Parsons was the only one to keep their streak alive, causing another turnover for the Wolves. At the end of the half, the Wolves trail 5-8.
In the third period, Elias ended the scoring drought. Taking it in all by herself, Elias was met with two defenders at the crease but was able to get the shot off in time. Messersmith found her second caused turnover of the game followed by Parsons claiming her third, late in the period. During the fourth, Plumer caused two turnovers in back to back possessions.
Against a national recognized team and offense, senior
Kaitlyn Mason was a forced to be reckoned with on defense. Locking down her opposition on multiple Bulldog plays, Mason did not let any attacker who matched up against her score and only allowed one wide left shot.
At the end of regulation, Elias led the team in draw controls with four, followed by Plumer and
Emma Jobs at two. Elias also tied as the teams leader in ground balls, tallying three along with Messersmith and Jess.
The Wolves finish off their week against Tiffin at home on Saturday, March 9 at 11 AM.
