NEWBERRY – Junior center fielder
Donovan Ford drove two runs on an infield single in the bottom of the ninth to lead the Newberry College baseball team (5-14, 1-5 SAC) to an 8-7 win over the Pacers of USC Aiken (7-12, 3-0 PBC) Wednesday evening.
Ford went 3-5 with two RBIs and a double. The top of the lineup (Ford,
Luke Compton, and
Jacob LeBron) drove in five runs in the winning effort.
Redshirt freshman
Brayden Gilson went 2.1 innings to get the win in relief for the Wolves. Gilson struck out two Pacers and didn't allow a run in the win.
Ford would lead off the game with a double then scoring one of the two first inning runs with Compton reaching on a throwing error from the Pacer third basemen to give the Wolves a 1-0 lead. Compton would advance to third on the throwing error. On the next at-bat,
Jacob LeBron would hit an infield single to second base to drive in Compton to make it 2-0.
The Pacers would answer with three runs in the second and third innings to take a 3-2 lead. But in the bottom of the third, the Wolves would tie it back up as
Rhett Jolly would get a RBI single up the middle.
The Wolves would re-gain the lead in the bottom of the fourth with a RBI fielder's choice from
Luke Compton, that would score
Chandler Mims to take a 4-3 lead.
The Wolves would extend the lead with Mims scoring off a wild pitch in the sixth inning to make it 5-3.
The Pacers would answer with four runs in the seventh inning to re-gain the lead at 7-5. To end that top of the seventh inning, Gilson would force a ground out in his first at-bat with the bases loaded to get out of the jam.
In the bottom of the seventh, Jolly would get his second rbi on a suicide squeeze that scored Faircloth to cut the deficit to 7-6.
Gilson would continue his solid outing going 1-2-3 in the top of the eighth and only allowing a single in the ninth before forcing a pop up in foul territory and a strikeout to give the Wolves momentum in the bottom of the ninth.
With two outs in the bottom of the ninth, the Wolves would get back-to-back walks from
Hunter French and
Cooper Gentry before
K.J. Leshko would get hit by a pitch to load the bases up for Ford. With a 2-2 count, Ford's speed would help him reach after hitting a chopper to third. On the throw, Gentry would round third and beat the throw to home to give the Wolves an 8-7 win and the team would mob Ford at first.
Up Next.
The Wolves will look to continue momentum with a three-game conference series on the road in Hartsville, S.C., against the Cobras of Coker University. Due to rain on Saturday, the series will have a double header Friday and a single game on Sunday.
