Richardson Posts Season High As The Wolves Cruise By The Bears

HICKORY, N.C. - Women's lacrosse earns another conference win against Lenoir-Rhyne (LR), 10-5.

Cassell Richardson sets a season high five goals for the Wolves, one goal short of her career best.

During the match the Wolves never trailed the Bears thanks to the first goal of the game by Emma Jobs. Prior to the goal, LR won the initial draw and was able to get a shot off on goal. With Mackenzie Dorr back in goal for the Wolves she handled the shot with no difficulty, setting up a successful clear which led to Jobs starting the scoring. Newberrry went on to trade goals for the remainder of the first period with Ella Todd stealing the rest of the period. Putting Newberry back on top, Todd scored off an unassisted door step goal. With 30 seconds remaining, Todd was awarded a free position attempt. Taking full advantage of it, Todd wrapped up the first period for Newberry, leading 3-2. Newberry's defense held its own against the Bears, allowing only four shots to reach Dorr, saving half of them.

The second period was significantly more quiet as only one goal was scored. Among the ease were some standout moments, Dorr went saved two out of three shots in the period as well as her defense stepped up. The period saw three caused turnovers, the first by Marin Paulenko followed by Emma Jobs then Adriana Hart. The Wolves also won both draw controls, one by Serena Elias and the other one, awarded to the team.

The third period was just as tamed as the second, except Newberry was on the scoring end. Cassell Richardson began her scoring campaign six minutes into the game, putting the Wolves back in the lead. Dorr shut out the Bears, saving three shots while facing five shots. Morgan Parsons registered her first caused turnover of the game as well.

The Wolves turned on the jets and never looked back in the fourth period. Richardson registered her second and third goal within the first seven minutes of the period. The first came from Jobs, registering her first assist of the game. After trading goals, Richardson found her second one thanks to Jobs yet again. Ella Todd broke Richardson's scoring run in an exciting way. After free attempt shot by Heather Johnston, the Bears failed to clear the ball thanks to a Todd caused turnover. Causing the turnover, she scooped up her own ground ball and scored in the same sequence, putting the Wolves up by three. Richardson continued her scoring festival, finding two more back to back. She called her own name in the first goal, scoring unassisted, but found help in the second goal off an assist from Elias. With the final goal of the game by Trysten Burns with the assist from Marissa Plumer, Burns is on a 12 game streak of scoring atleast one point whether that be an asist or goal.

At the end of regulation, Madalyn Messersmith led the Wolves in caused turnovers with two and Dorr finished the day saving nine goals while only allowing five. This is the first match all season where a Newberry goalie has saved more shots than allowed.
