GREENWOOD, S.C. – Playing in their first tournament in two weeks, the Newberry College women's golf team finished 11th at the Lander Lady Bearcat Invitational over Monday and Tuesday at Greenwood Country Club.
Wingate (+40) won the tournament by two strokes over Lee University. Limestone (+45), Montevallo (+47) and Lander (+51) rounded out the top five.
Noelia Adkins, who finished in a four-way tie for ninth, was the highest finishing Wolf at 8-over. Adkins improved in each subsequent round, shooting 77-74-73 on the par-72 course. She carded three birdies each in the second and third rounds, her 36 pars were third most in the field of 115, and she was also fourth in par-3 scoring for the week.
Sofia Liden (+18) finished tied for 36th with rounds of 77-76-81. Liden had five birdies over her three rounds, the third most on the team.
Nicole Strydom was a shot behind Liden after carding a 79 to open the tournament, followed by a 74 and an 82. Strydom had two birdies in the first round, one in the final round, and in-between, she had an impressive five birdies in Round 2 for eight total during the week to lead the Wolves.
Julie Hoscalkova was 29-over and completed Newberry's scoring.
Blanca Noriega was five strokes behind her teammate and made four birdies, including three in the second round which was her best of the tournament.
Newberry has a few weeks to prepare for the South Atlantic Conference Women's Golf Championship April 14-16 at the Country Club of Salisbury in North Carolina.
