NEWBERRY – The Newberry College baseball team (15-16, 9-6 SAC) secured a three-game sweep with a 12-3 win over the Highland Cavaliers of UVA Wise (9-21, 6-9 SAC)
Junior outfielder
Kade Faircloth had a stellar day at the dish as the Wolves designated hitter as he went 2-3 with a double, triple, and drove in three runs on the afternoon. Junior left-hander
Ethan LeBron went 4.2 innings in relief and struck out three batters to get the win and improve to 3-2 on the season.
The Highland Cavaliers would strike first in the top of the first to take their first lead of the game with a rbi single.
The Wolves would tie the game up in the next half inning, as Faircloth would hit a triple down the right field that would score
Jacob LeBron.
In the next inning, the Wolves would load the bases up for
Donovan Ford to hit a sacrifice fly that would score
Bryson Nuckols to give Newberry a 2-1 lead.
The Highland Cavaliers would strike back in the third as they would add two runs on an errant throw to make it 3-2.
That would be the last lead that UVA Wise would have as the Wolves would rip off 10 unanswered runs starting with a successful double steal with
Luke White stealing second and
Jacob LeBron would score to tie the game up at three. On the same at-bat
Bryson Nuckols would bring home White with a RBI single up the middle to give the Wolves a 4-3 lead.
The Wolves would add another run on in the fourth inning as Faircloth would drive Ford home with a double to right center to make it 5-3.
The Wolves would break the game open with a four-run sixth inning starting with a bases loaded two-run double from
Luke Compton to make it 7-3. Faircloth would get his third rbi of the evening on a successful squeeze play that would score Ford as Faircloth would reach on an error from the UVA Wise Catcher. After Faircloth would steal second,
Josh Watson would get a rbi groundout on his first at-bat of the evening to make it 9-3.
Two Innings later, the Wolves would tack on three more, starting with a run from a strike three that would get away as Faircloth would reach first, and LeBron would score from third after hitting a one out triple. Faircloth would score from a pinch-hit single from
Keillor Osbon to extend the lead to 11-3. Two batters later,
Josh Watson would score from a wild pitch to make it 12-3.
