Marchesini Shines as Wolves Shutout Mars Hill

MARS HILL, N.C. – Senior right-handed pitcher Matias Marchesini threw eight innings of shutout baseball leading the Newberry College Baseball team (16-16, 10-6 SAC) to a 1-0 shutout win over the Mars Hill Lions (11-23, 3-13 SAC) Friday afternoon at Henderson Field on the campus of Mars Hill University.

Marchesini struck out seven Lion hitters and did not allow a single walk to improve his season record to 2-0. Marchesini would not allow a runner in scoring position until his final inning. His fellow senior, Wyatt Carey would set the Lions down in order in the bottom of the ninth to earn his third save of the season.

Senior right fielder Jacob LeBron would have the lone multi-hit afternoon for the Wolves on the offensive side. LeBron would go 2-4 with a triple in the top of the first but would get thrown out at home on an attempted double steal. Luke Compton would have the lone RBI as he went 1-4.

The Wolves would score the lone run of the game in the top of the eighth as Donovan Ford would score after hitting a triple on a rbi pinch hit single from Luke Compton with two outs in the inning.

In the bottom of the eighth the Wolves defense would prevent a run as Ford would gun down a runner for the third out of the bottom of the eighth to keep the score at 1-0.

The 1-0 victory marks the first shutout win for the Wolves since April 10 last season as they would shut out the Indians of Catawba at the Smith Rd. Complex

The Wolves and the Lions will be back at Henderson field tomorrow for a double header with the Lions with the first pitch starting at 12:00 p.m.
