NEWBERRY – The Newberry College baseball team (14-16, 8-6 SAC) swept the Highland Cavaliers of UVA Wise (9-20, 6-8 SAC) in a Sunday double header at the Smith Rd. Complex.
The Wolves won game one 5-3 and followed it up with a 9-1 win.
Freshman outfielder,
Luke Compton went 4-7 on the afternoon with three rbis, all of them coming in game two. Junior outfielder
Donovan Ford had two hits in both games, continuing his multi-hit game streak to nine straight games. Junior right-handed pitcher
Hunter French threw seven innings of shutout ball in game one of the double header.
Game One
The Wolves took game one with timely hitting in the third and fourth innings by a final of 5-3. French went seven innings giving to earn the win.
The Wolves would strike first in the bottom of the third with a rbi infield single from
Jacob LeBron to give the Wolves a 1-0 lead. The Wolves would rally for two runs with two outs starting with a
Kade Faircloth rbi single the other way to extend the Wolves lead to 2-0. On the next at-bat,
Henry Gibson would rip a double down the left field line, scoring Faircloth to make it 3-0.
The Wolves would add on to their lead in the next inning with a single up the middle from Ford that would score
Jesse Free to make it 4-0.
The Wolves and Highland Cavaliers would exchange four scoreless innings before the Wolves would get an insurance run as Gibson would be the first Wolf to hit a home run at the Smith Rd. Complex this season, giving the Wolves a 5-0 lead in the bottom of the eighth inning.
The Highland Cavaliers would score three in the top of the ninth, but Braydon Gilson would shut the door giving the Wolves a 5-3 lead to start the double header.
Game One Stats
- The Top of the order would produce for the Wolves in game one as Donovan Ford, Luke Compton, and Jacob LeBron would combine to go 4-9 with two rbis.
- Redshirt Senior Henry Gibson was the slugger for the Wolves in game one. Gibson went 2-4 with a RBI double and a solo home run to right field.
- Junior Pitcher Hunter French threw seven innings giving up no runs and striking out a Highland Cavalier to earn his third win of the season.
Game Two.
The Wolves would score four in the second and not look back taking game two by a 9-1 decision.
UVA Wise would strike first in game two, scoring their only run with a rbi groundout to take a 1-0 lead.
The Wolves would strike back in the bottom of the second starting off with a two-run double from
Jomar Lugo to take a 2-1 lead. On the next at-bat, Ford would hit a triple to the right centerfield gap to score Lugo and extend the Wolves' lead to 3-1. On the next at-bat Compton would bring Ford home with a single the other way to left field to make it 4-1.
Two innings later, Compton would get another rbi with a two-run triple down the right field line to make it 6-1. On the next at-bat LeBron would drive Compton home with a rbi groundout to make it 7-1.
Freshman outfielder
Keillor Osbon would enter the game in the bottom of the sixth as a pinch hitter and rip a pinch hit rbi double down the right field line to score LeBron and extend the Wolves' lead to 8-1. Osbon would later score on a Wild Pitch to make it 9-1 in favor of the Wolves.
Game Two Stats
- Freshman Outfielder Luke Compton had a career-high three rbis in game two. He finished the afternoon going 4-7 with three runs driven in.
- The Wolves would get production from the bottom of the order and the top as Jomar Lugo would go 1-1 with the rbi double. Donovan Ford would have another multi-hit game making it nine straight games with multiple hits.
- Pitchers Tyler Chinpire and Matias Marchesini would have two stellar outings in game two. Chinpire would throw 3.1 innings striking out four UVA Wise batters. Marchesini would come in relief in the top of the fourth finishing the game striking out three batters and allowing no walks to earn his first win of the season.
