NEWBERRY, S.C. - Women's lacrosse comes up short against #14 Limestone.
Trysten Burns has a career night, scoring a total of seven points.
In Saturday's early window match-up, senior attack
Trysten Burns put the team on her back, leading Newberry to a narrow loss. Burns finished the afternoon off going 4-6 on goals and tallying three assists. Two of her goals came off of a free position.
Senior defender
Kaitlyn Mason showed up where she needed to. Leading the team in ground balls with four, Mason was also one of seven Wolves to cause a turnover.
Despite the slow start, the Wolves kept up the intensity until
Hanna Bond opened up the score sheet. Coming down from the box, no Saints defender slid to pick up Bond as she raced towards the crease. With the ball at X, Burns found Bond wide open five feet from the goal. Bond went on to rip one to the back of the net thanks to Burns's first assist of the game with five minutes remaining in the period. This goal ended the first period scoring for either side, Wolves trail 1-3.
Scoring opened up much quicker for the Wolves this time around by none other than Bond yet again. Man-up,
Marissa Plumer held the ball at the top of the offense's wheel where Bond was able to slip through the Saint's defenses again. Dumping the ball to Bond, needing only to rotate towards the goal, Bond earned her second goal of the game and Plumer, her first assist of the game. Cutting to GLE from the left side wing,
Serena Elias earned her goal off a feed Burns with a door step dump putting the Wolves within one. Low angles mean nothing to Burns as she ended the scoring for both teams in the last two minutes of the half. Burns was positioned with a low angle right side free position attempt where she let it loose a side arm ripper soaring past her defenders feet. Going into the half, the Wolves trailed the Saints 4-6.
The third period could not have started better for the Wolves. Plumer was given a free position attempt square in front of the cage. Rather than opting to shoot, she found Burns barreling in through the right side, where she would then pass it to Burns letting her finish the job. Around where she scored her previous goal, Burns caught a pass off a clear from
Ella Todd. As three Saints ran in to smoother Burns, that left
Cassell Richardson wide open to go one-on-one with the goalie. This sequence put the Wolves back within one goal due to them trading goals since the previous one. Unfortunately luck was not on the Wolves side and after multiple referee calls, Newberry enters the fourth period trailing 6-11.
Burns opened up the scoring for the Wolves almost halfway through the period. On a free position attempt, Burns had a left post stinger, reigniting the offense. Richardson got her last goal of the game off of Plumer's final assist. With Plumer at the top of the key, she found Richardson cutting in from the right side wing, beating the incoming slide and scoring a door step goal. As a final farewell present, Burns finished her offensive dominance with one more goal in the last minute of regulation. Off an assist from Richardson, Burns let it rip from 10 yards out between two defenders. With that goal, the Wolves finish the match trailing by five.
The Wolves will be back in action next Saturday where they take on the Bears of Lenoir-Rhyne at 1 P.M.
