AUGUSTA, GA. – The Newberry College baseball team (12-16, 6-6 SAC) came back from down 8-0 to defeat the Jaguars of Augusta University (16-12, 6-3 PBC) 15-8 Tuesday evening at Jaguars Field.
Redshirt Senior first baseman
Henry Gibson went 3-5 with four RBIs and two opposite field singles. Redshirt freshman right hander
Brayden Gilson got his second win of the season for the Wolves. Gilson struck out two batters in his one inning pitched for the Wolves.
The Wolves went into the top of the fifth inning trailing 8-0. The Wolves would put six runs on the board starting with back-to-back bases loaded walks from
Bryson Nuckols and
Luke White to cut the deficit to 8-2.
Chandler Mims would drive in the third run with a sacrifice fly. Two batters later,
Donovan Ford would get hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to make it 8-4. On the next at-bat,
Luke Compton would drive in the final two runs of the inning to chip the Jaguars lead to 8-6.
In the next inning,
Kade Faircloth would get hit by a pitch to lead off the top of the sixth. During the next at-bat, Faircloth would steal second and advance to third on a wild pitch before Gibson would drive him home with a RBI single to left to cut the deficit to one run. Three batters later, Mims would have a successful suicide squeeze to score Gibson to tie the game at eight.
The Wolves would take the lead in the top of the seventh with a three-run inning started with a rbi single from Faircloth to give the Wolves a 9-8 lead. On the next at-bat Gibson would get his second RBI with a ground out scoring
Jacob LeBron to make it 10-8. The
Bryson Nuckols would score Faircloth on an RBI single up the middle to make it 11-8.
Faircloth would hit a sacrifice fly to start the three run eighth inning for the Wolves to make it 12-8. On the next at-bat, Gibson would get his final two RBIs of the night with a double to score LeBron and Compton to extend the lead to 14-8. Nuckols would drive in Gibson in on the next at-bat with a single to right field.
Senior left hander
Wyatt Carey would come into the game in the bottom of the eighth inning and would prevent the Jaguars from getting a runner in scoring position to get the 15-8 win.
