ANDERSON, S.C. – The Newberry College baseball team (11-16, 6-6 SAC) scored five runs in the top of the fifth inning in route of their 12-10 victory, completing a three-game sweep against the Trojans of Anderson University (11-14, 4-11 SAC) Sunday afternoon.
Junior center fielder
Donovan Ford went 3-4 at the dish with a home run and three RBIs. Senior right-hander
Kyle Baker got the win in relief for the Wolves.
Wyatt Carey got his third save of the season.
In a game where both teams took the lead twice, the Wolves took the lead first in the top of the first with a lead off home run from Ford to make it 1-0. The Wolves would add two more runs from an RBI Sacrifice Fly from
Kade Faircloth and an RBI single from
Henry Gibson to give Newberry a 3-0 lead to start the game.
The Trojans would score seven runs in the second and third innings to take a 7-3. The Wolves would cut the Trojan lead to 7-5 with RBI singles from
Jomar Lugo and Ford in the top of the fourth.
The Wolves would regain the lead with a five run fifth inning to make it 10-7. The scoring in the fifth started with an RBI triple from Gibson to cut the Trojan lead to 7-6. On the next at-bat,
Josh Watson would score Gibson to tie the game at 7-7. The Wolves would re-gain the lead as Ford would get hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to make it 8-7.On the next at-bat,
Rhett Jolly would score two with an single up the middle to make it 10-7.
The Trojans would score three unanswered runs in the bottom of the seventh and eighth innings to tie it up at 10.
But the Wolves would complete the sweep with two insurance runs in the top of the ninth with two sac flies from
Luke Compton and
Jacob LeBron to make it 12-10. In the bottom of the ninth,
Wyatt Carey would come in and shut the door with the tying run at the plate.
