15 Second-Half Goals Propel Newberry to 19-13 Road Victory over Catawba

SALISBURY, N.C. – 15 goals in the final 30 minutes propelled the Newberry College men's lacrosse team to a 19-13 road win over Catawba on Saturday at Shuford Stadium.

Though the Wolves took a bit of time to get things rolling, their dominant second half ensured the erasure of a 6-4 halftime deficit and a pair of four-goal Catawba leads in the third
quarter.

Newberry (7-1, 2-1 SAC) was led by Scott Reed's 11-point afternoon with six goals and five assists. It's the second game this season Reed has eclipsed 10 points, and the fifth time he's registered at least six goals.

Curtis Bukta, Jimmy Osorio and Baker Westmoreland each had hat-tricks while Miles Jones, Sam Parent, Brock Strong and Zach Thompson scored once.

On the defensive side, Brian Lake and Jack Travassos both caused a pair of turnovers and Travassos grabbed seven ground balls for the Wolves.

With Newberry trailing by two at the half, Catawba (5-4, 2-2 SAC) extended its lead to 8-4 2:12 into the third quarter. Bukta, Reed and Strong scored three of the game's next four goals to bring the Scarlet and Gray within 9-7 with 9:08 left in the third.

The Indians again opened up a four-goal margin with back-to-back goals a minute apart to make it 11-7. Newberry, however, had a resounding response: Five unanswered goals over the last 5:47 of the quarter to take a 12-11 lead into the fourth.

Scoring those five goals were Jones, Westmoreland – on the man-advantage – Reed twice and another from Bukta.

Parent added his second of the season and first of the day just 30 seconds into the closing quarter, followed 30 seconds later by Bukta's third for a 14-11 Wolves advantage.

Reed assisted Osorio and Westmoreland before scoring his fifth of the day halfway through the final quarter to push the Newberry lead to 17-12. Reed closed his goal-scoring effort with 1:33 to go in the game but found Osorio with 13 seconds left for a man-up goal to reach 11 points and the 19-13 margin of victory.

If the stat sheet is an indicator, it was only a matter of time before Newberry took command of the game as they dominated virtually every phase. The Wolves outshot the hosts 58-44 and 34-26 in shots on net. Newberry controlled the ground ball battle 56-23, won 24 of 35 faceoffs, and Ryan Erler and Nolan Downey combined to make 13 saves on 26 shots faced.

Newberry returns to action a week from today (March 23) for a date with Limestone at Setzler Field. Faceoff is scheduled for 4 p.m.
