No. 9 Men's Lacrosse Falls at Home to No. 1 Limestone

NEWBERRY – The No. 9 Newberry College men's lacrosse team fell 20-12 at home to No. 1 Limestone on Saturday afternoon.

The Wolves (7-2, 2-2 SAC) had four players score twice – Shane Halliwell, Scott Reed, Zach Thompson and Baker Westmoreland. Four players added one goal each: Miles Jones, Jonny MacLean, Jimmy Osorio and David Squires.

On the defensive side, Squires caused four turnovers and grabbed as many ground balls on the day. Jack Travassos caused a turnover and picked up three ground balls.

Limestone (11-0, 5-0) scored two early goals for a 2-0 advantage 4:19 into the outing. Thompson got Newberry on the board halfway through the first unassisted.

The Saints had an answer a minute later before Thompson netted his second and MacLean scored his first goal as a Wolf with 3:08 to play in the opening quarter to tie it at 3
heading into the second.

The visitors scored six straight goals over the first 11 minutes of that second quarter to gain a 9-3 advantage. Newberry responded with a similar run however, as Jones, Westmoreland (twice) and Halliwell all scored to cut the deficit to 9-7 by halftime.

A pair of Saints goals at the beginning of the second half made it 11-7 Limestone. Squires found plenty of space after forcing a turnover and rifled home his first of the year at the 10:17 mark to make it a three-goal game. Westmoreland then found Halliwell just over a minute later to bring it back within two.

Limestone went up 12-9 after a five-minute scoring drought for both sides but Osorio scored a man-up goal with 33 seconds left in the quarter to make it 12-10. The Saints had a quick response and carried a 13-10 lead into the final 15 minutes of action. In those final minutes, they outscored the Wolves 7-2 for the final score.

Goalkeeper Ryan Erler faced 42 shots and saved 22 of them for a .524 save percentage.

Newberry returns to Setzler Field on Wednesday night (March 27) for another conference game against Coker. Faceoff is scheduled for 7:00.
