Wolves Sweep Double Header Securing a Series Win against the Trojans.

ANDERSON, S.C. – The Newberry College baseball team (10-16, 5-6 SAC) sweep the Trojans of Anderson University (11-13, 4-10 SAC) in their conference double header Saturday afternoon at Spero Financial Field.
 
The Wolves had solid pitching from Hunter French and Tyler Chinpire as they earned the wins for the Wolves.
Jomar Lugo shined in the nine spot going 4-8 on the day driving in three runs,

The Wolves took game one by a score of 9-8 and game two by a 12-5 score.

Game One
The Wolves jumped out to multiple four run leads and held on to win by one in game one 9-8.

The Wolves got production from their eight and nine hitters in Chandler Mims and Jomar Lugo. Lugo went 3-5 with two rbis and Mims also drove in two runs in the first game.

The Wolves got things started in the top of the first when Brody Winter hit his first home run of the season over the left center field fence to give the Wolves a 1-0 lead.
After the Trojans would tie it up in the bottom of the first, Jomar Lugo would give the lead back to the Wolves with an RBI single to make it 2-1.

In the next inning, Jesse Free would reach on an infield single that drove in a run to extend their lead to 3-1.

In the top of the fifth, the Wolves would keep extending their lead as Henry Gibson would drive in a run with an RBI ground out to make it 4-1.

The Trojans would cut the Wolves lead to one run with a two-run bottom of the fifth, but the Wolves would answer in the top of the sixth with a RBI single from Donovan Ford to make it 5-3.
In the next inning, Rhett Jolly would drive in a run with a sacrifice fly to make it 6-4. The Trojans would score in the bottom half from a wild pitch to make it 6-5.

After the Wolves and Trojans would exchange a scoreless eighth, the Wolves would add some insurance runs in the top of the ninth starting with a two-run double from Mims with two outs to make it 8-5. On the next at-bat, Lugo would get his second rbi of the game with a single through the left side of the infield that would score Mims and make it 9-5.
 
The Trojans would score three in the bottom of the ninth, but Wyatt Carey would get his first save of the season securing the Wolves' 9-8 win.
Game One Stats/Notes
  • Donovan Ford and Jomar Lugo both had three hit performances in the victory. Lugo Drove in two runs.
  • Brody Winter's Home Run in the first was his fourth career and the second home run hit by a Wolf this season.
  • Hunter French threw 5.2 innings to get his second win of the season to improve to 2-2.
  • Wyatt Carey came in with the bases loaded in the bottom of the ninth with the Trojans having the tying and winning run on second and third.
Game Two
After trailing 4-0, the Wolves took game two by a 12-5 score. Senior right hander Tyler Chinpire got the win throwing five innings pitched in relief.

The Trojans scored four runs in the bottom of the second to take a 4-0 lead.

In the next half inning, the Wolves would fight back with three runs starting with a Lugo run on a Balk to make it 4-1. On the same at-bat Luke Compton would drive in Ford with an infield single to third to cut the Trojan lead to 4-2. Kade Faircloth would drive in the third run with an RBI ground out to make it 4-3.

The Wolves would regain the lead in the top of the fourth with four runs starting with an RBI single to tie it up at four. Two batters later, Lugo would score on an RBI single to left field from Luke Compton to make it 5-4. On the next at-bat with runners on first and third, LeBron would clear the bases with a two-run triple to make it 7-4.

In the next inning, the Wolves would add two more runs as Ford would get hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to extend the lead to 8-4. The Wolves would score on a wild pitch later in the top of the fifth to make it 9-4.

The Trojans would score a run to cut it to 9-5, but the Wolves would continue to add on. In the top of the sixth, Faircloth would start the scoring with an RBI double scoring LeBron to make it 10-5. On the next at-bat, Faircloth would score from a single from Gibson to make it 11-5. Two batters later, Gibson would score on an rbi from Campbell McCurry to make it 12-5.

Chinpire would throw five innings in relief, striking out five batters to earn his first win of the season.
 
Game Two Stats/Notes
  • Senior right fielder Jacob LeBron went 3-4 with two rbis and two stolen bases.
  • Tyler Chinpire threw 5 IP striking out four batters to improve his record to 1-4.
  • The Wolves got production from the top of the order as their 1,2, and 3 hitters went a combined 7-12 with five rbis and three stolen bases.

The two teams will be playing game three tomorrow afternoon as the Wolves look to complete a three-game sweep at 2:00 p.m., at Spero Financial Field.
