PREVIEW: Wolves Travel To Lander For The Super Region II Tournament

GREENWOOD, S.C. - Men's wrestling takes on the Super Region II championship hosted by Lander tomorrow, March 2nd at 10 A.M.

11 teams will be represented in the tournament: Lander, Belmont Abbey, Emmanuel, King, Montevallo, Mount Olive, UNC Pembroke, Coker, Limestone, Lincoln Memorial and Newberry. In duels, the Wolves have defeated six of these teams this season, and defeated King twice.

The tournament will host 110 different wrestlers among 10 weight classes. Among these wrestlers are four nationally ranked #1 wrestlers, three #4 ranked wrestlers, one #5, two #8s, one #9, one #10 and two #11s. Currently, Newberry's 285 Devon Rice is the only ranked wrestler, sitting at #11.

The Wolves will face many familiar faces during the tournament. Zach Shupp has yet to defeat #1 James Joplin from Lander this season after losing to him 2-5 in the conference championship. Another notable match for Shupp is current #5 Logan Seliga. Seliga and Shupp have not met yet this season.

At 133 Ben Guilliam's toughest prospective opponents are #1 Gabe Hixenbaugh from Montevallo and #8 Elijah Musk from Lander. Against Super Region II (SRII) opponents Guilliam is 4-3, splitting his matches with King, and defeating Coker, Mount Olive and Limestone.

The 141 class is slightly less packed compared to the others, but still none the less tight. JP Gamez will face off against a mix of opponents, consisting of #9 Isham Peace from Lander.

Devan Moore has had a mix of a season after wrestling in one of the toughest weight classes. The returning All-American has a bracket consisting of #4 Zeth Brower from Lander and #10 Jake Piccirilli from UNC Pembroke. Moore previously met Brower in the conference championship, losing his match. Earlier this season Piccirilli and Moore faced with Moore losing that match as well.

Keagan Judd came onto the season late for Wolves at 157 and still commands the mat like a vet. His bracket will consist of #4 Keegan Roberson from UNC Pembroke and previously ranked Maxwell Kiell from Belmont Abbey. In Judd's collegiate debut he and Kiell faced off, losing a very tight 15-21.

P.J. Wunderlich returns to the championship after qualifying for nationals last year at 157. He will have to face off a difficult bracket fluctuating in difficult with #1 David Hunsberger from Lander and #11 Trent Mahoney.

Andrew Reed is coming off of an upset against Lander at 174, going undefeated at the conference championship. Reed will have to climb the ladder and face off against #1 Scotty Joll from UNC Pembroke. Previously Reed has had a string of difficult matches, facing off against Joll twice, current #10 Nate Barrett from Ashland and #11 James Penfold from Lake Erie. Reed is undefeated in all his matches except those.

The 184 Ib class has no ranked wrestlers for Jacoby Benjamin to face off against. Regardless, his 16 win season has seasoned him to go undefeated the conference championship, handily upsetting Lander in the meeting.

After taking down #8 Anthony Yacovetti in the conference championship, John Parker stands as one of Newberry's most dominant wrestlers this season. Parker is currently tied for 6 in the nation in falls with nine. In his weight class, Parker is undefeated against all SRII opponents hes faced this season.

The only ranked wrestler on this squad, Devon Rice currently sits at #11. His road to the finals will be another meetup with #4 Juan Edmond-Holmes from Lander. Rice not only leads the Wolves in victories this season with 24 but is also undefeated against all SRII opponents he has faced, outside of Edmond-Holmes.

The top three finishers in each weight class will punch their ticket to the National Championship on March 15th and 16th.
