NEWBERRY, S.C. - Men's wrestling clinches the two seed in the Conference Carolinas east division with their win tonight over Mount Olive 37-9.
Prior to the regulation matches, seniors
Will Evans and
Armando Acosta wrestled in two exhibition matches at 157 and 184.
Will Evans claimed the first fall of the night against the Trojans in 3:14. Not far behind him, Acosta also claimed a fall in similar fashion in 3:35. Both Evans and Acosta were recognized tonight as seniors, ending their collegiate career on the highest note.
Zach Shupp was also recognized during tonights ceremony after a decorated career as a wolf. Shupp came out firing on all cylinders, barely giving his opposition an inch. Wrapping up his regular season career, Shupp defeated Mount Olive's Lens Mathurin by 17-2 tech fall in a time of 4:29 to give the Wolves a 5-0 lead. After a handful of take downs by freshman
Ben Guilliam, he claimed his second fall of his collegiate career tonight in a time of 4:40, to extend the Wolves lead to 11-0. The next win came from none other than 149 stud
Devan Moore. Moore battled Mount Olive's Dallas Wilson for the first period but held on claiming 7-6 decision victory to give Newberry a 14-6 lead.
Tonights match of the night came from another senior night highlight, 165 Ib
P.J. Wunderlich against Mount Olive's Aaron Bancroft. With seven seconds left in regulation, Wunderlich was up 6-5. His opponent got the escape with five seconds remaining putting the score 6-6. Had the match ended there, Bancroft would come out victorious due to a one point ride time setting it 6-7. With three seconds remaining Wunderlich pulled off an incredible buzzer-beater take-down, securing the win 9-7 to give the Wolves a 17-9 lead before the intermission.
Adding to the nail-biting frenzy, 174 Ib
Andrew Reed and Calan Staub went into overtime tied at eight. Within the first 15 seconds, Reed wrapped up his match with a two leg take-down, sealing it 11-8 and extending the dual to 20-9. Another senior recognized tonight was 184 Ib
Jacoby Benjamin. Benjamin claimed the second tech fall of the night in 4:25 with a score of 19-4 to extend the Wolves lead to 25-9.197 Ib
John Parker continues to move up the national rankings after yet another fall, setting his season total to eight. Parker defeated Nathan Hampton in the first period at 2:54 to put the dual at 31-9. Wrapping up the wolves night was the last senior represented on the mat, 285 Ib
Devon Rice. Rice finished the night pinning his opponent in 6:55, ending his collegiate regular season undefeated in conference play this season and finalizing a 37-9 dual victory for the Wolves.
Clinching the two seed, the wolves face number one seeded Lander in the conference championship on February 17-18 at UNC-Pembroke.
