MILL SPRING, N.C. – Back in action for the first time in 10 days, the Newberry College track and field team performed well at the Tryon Collegiate Opener today, securing two top-placers on the men's team and another pair on the women's team.
Parker Pitts won the men's weight throw competition for the second meet in a row, heaving it a season-best 16.68 meters to edge out teammate
Kegan Crowell's 15.44-meter throw in second.
Pitts is in first place on the South Atlantic Conference Indoor Performance List in the category, and Crowell is third.
Noel Asiedu secured his third high jump win in as many meets for the Wolves, clearing a 1.95m bar. His 2.08m effort back on Jan. 21 still has him atop the SAC Indoor Performance List as well as T-20th in Division II.
Leonie Samuels earned her second shot put victory of the season, throwing it 12.03m as Newberry swept the top three positions in the women's event. Behind Samuels were
Kiori Butler with a season-best performance (11.80m) and
ShaNadia Marshall (10.65m).
Samuels is currently second on the SAC Indoor Performance List thanks to her 13.03m throw back on Dec. 3.
Irma Watson-Peréz notched her first win of the indoor season in the weight throw competition with a 17.44m throw. Her 17.96m heave at the Florida Collegiate Invitational keeps her in first on the SAC Indoor Performance List and T-15th in DII.
In the men's 60m dash, the Scarlet and Gray had two of the top three finishers in
Davison Wright and
Janarrious Hillman. Wright ran it in 7.10 seconds and Hillman, 7.21 seconds. Wright was also second in the long jump at 7.07m, just 0.02m (0.75 inches) out of first place to set a new career mark.
Courtney Blankenship had a pair of third-place results in the 60m dash and long jump. Her 60m time was 8.47 seconds while she jumped 4.81m in her first ever long jump event.
The Wolves have a quick turnaround with Thursday's (Feb. 8) JDL College Team Challenge in Winston-Salem, N.C.
