SALISBURY, N.C. – The Newberry College baseball team (4-11, 1-5 SAC) fell 6-5 to the Indians of Catawba College (10-5, 1-2 SAC) this evening at Newman Park.
The Wolves had solid production from junior centerfielder
Donovan Ford who went 2-4 with an RBI single, a double and a stolen base.
The Indians struck first with a run in the first inning followed by two runs in the second to take an early 3-0 lead.
The Wolves would tack two on the board in the top of the third with
John Rollings leading off with a single. Later Rollings would score on a rbi single from
Jacob LeBron to make it 3-1. On the next at-bat, Ford would score on a wild pitch to cut the lead to 3-2.
The Indians would score a run in the fourth and fifth inning to make it 5-2.
After an Indian run in the bottom of the seventh to make it 6-2, the Wolves would have a chance to tie it up in the eighth. With the bases loaded,
Cooper Gentry would reach with a fielder's choice to cut the lead to 5-3. Two batters later, Ford would use his speed to dig out an infield single to make it 5-4. Two batters later,
Henry Gibson would step in and score another run with a bases loaded walk to make it a one run game.
The Indians would get out of the jam in both the eighth and ninth innings to hold on to a 6-5 victory.
