NEWBERRY, S.C. - Women's lacrosse defeats the UVA Wise Cavaliers 14-13.
The Wolves opened a can of goals against the Cavaliers with
Jadie Burns dropping a man-up dime off an assist from
Hanna Bond. After a handful of Cavaliers goals,
Ella Todd stopped their scoring run with an assist from
Serena Elias. Although Newberry finished the first period down 3-2, the Wolves had a stout defensive scheme that caused three turnovers thanks to
Trysten Burns,
Marissa Plumer and Elias, and notched five ground balls. The Wolves also went 5-1 in draw controls, led by
Mackenzie Watson (2), Bond (1) and Plumer (1).
The second period was an awakening the team needed, with Newberry trailing now by two, 5-7. Starting off hot, the Wolves went on a two point with
Emma Jobs finding her only goal of the game from a free position shot. Todd tallied her second goal of the game three games later with another free position shot. The next goal wouldn't come until three minutes remained in the half from captain
Heather Johnston thanks to an assist from fellow captain, Bond. In the second, three different Wolves added to the caused turnover pool. The first came from
Marin Paulenko, followed by
Morgan Parsons. The last came off a crucial stop by the last of the captain trifecta,
Madalyn Messersmith, who stopped the Cavaliers while they were on a fast break with 11 seconds remaining in the half.
Head coach
Tommy Kelly got the team in the right mindset to turn this game around, taking the third period 5-4. Off a free position, Watson found her first goal of the match in the opening two minutes of the period. Plumer also found her first goal of the game one minute later in the same fashion as Watson. After an answer by the Cavaliers, Plumer took it into her hands to return the favor, tallying her second of the game. Off an assist from T. Burns, Elias added a goal to her name immediately after she won her drawn control. To put the Wolves within one, freshman
Scythe Shephard found the back of the net for the first time of the season, with two minutes remaining in the third. The excitement didn't end there though. Goal keeper
Kaitlyn LaManna came in clutch with a necessary save with four seconds on the clock, ending the period on a high note. Overall, the Wolves possessed five draw controls thanks to the supporting cast of Bond, Plumer, and Elias.
The fourth period was all Newberry, as they doubled UVA Wise's goals in the period, 4-2. Shephard started off a four point run, adding to her collegiate debut. T. Burns hit back to back goals in two minutes. The first came from a free position and the second came off an assist from Todd. Plumer finished off the night with a hat trick thanks to yet another free position shot. Not only did the Wolves out score the Cavaliers in the fourth but they also out draw controlled them with four thanks to Bond and Jobs. The Cavaliers did not cause a single turnover in the period, additionally the Wolves were squeeky clean, not having a turnover against themselves. On the flip side, Parsons added another caused turnover along with Bond.
Overall, the Wolves were pristine, successfully converting all 14 of their clears. The team also out groundballed the Cavaliers 16-12 and won 18 draw controls compared to the Cavaliers 13.
The Wolves continue their six home game stretch against Mount Olive at 4 P.M. on Wednesday, Feb. 28.
