Men's Lacrosse Handles Mount Olive 17-6 for 2-0 Start

MOUNT OLIVE, N.C. – A seven-goal first quarter and 10-goal first half was more than enough production to ensure victory for the Newberry College men's lacrosse team on Saturday over Mount Olive, but it certainly didn't stop there in a dominant 17-6 road win.

Scott Reed scored five goals and added an assist to reach the 200-point mark in his Newberry career.

Baker Westmoreland also scored five goals for Newberry (2-0), and Zach Thompson found the back of the net three times and picked up a trio of assists for a six-point game.

Thomas Gregory, Shane Halliwell, Jimmy Osorio and Brock Strong each scored once.

Reed got the scoring underway a minute and 30 seconds into the contest off a feed from Adrian Channell. Westmoreland sandwiched goals around Osorio's fifth of the season before Thompson made it 5-0 just five minutes into the game.

Mount Olive (1-2) got on the board with nine minutes left in the opening quarter before Westmoreland and Reed added one more each to make it 7-1 after one.

The Trojans registered the first goal of the second quarter only 56 seconds in. Reed had an answer in short order off the ensuing faceoff to bring the Wolves' margin back to six, 8-2. Strong and Halliwell netted their first goals of 2024 halfway through the frame but Mount Olive matched those for a 10-4 halftime score.

Both teams were befallen by a lengthy scoring drought before the Wolves broke through with their 11th of the day 10 minutes into the second half – a Westmoreland man-up goal.

Reed assisted Thompson on goal No. 12 a minute later and scored his fourth of the day with six ticks left in the third for a 13-4 Newberry advantage heading into the last.

Thompson scored his final goal to start the fourth quarter and set-up Westmoreland for another Newberry man-up goal to make it 15-4 with eight minutes left in the game. Sam Parent found Reed for his fifth goal and sixth point of the day for the magic number 200 points in Reed's career with 7:19 to play.

Gregory added his second career goal with 5:36 to go to close Newberry's scoring.

The Wolves outshot Mount Olive 46-26 for the game, including a 29-12 advantage in shots on goal. Newberry also won 16 of 26 faceoffs and picked up 34 ground balls to the Trojans' 23. Jack Travassos caused a team-best four turnovers and David Squires caused two.

Newberry stays on the road this Wednesday (Feb. 21) for a game against Emmanuel (Ga.). Faceoff is scheduled for 4 p.m.
