FRANKLIN SPRINGS, Ga. – Seven goals in the first quarter and 13 goals by halftime put the Newberry College men's lacrosse team well on its way to victory over Emmanuel University on Wednesday afternoon, as they won 20-2.
Jimmy Osorio led Newberry (3-0) with four goals, and
Shane Halliwell,
Scott Reed and
Baker Westmoreland all had three.
Carson Andrews,
Curtis Bukta,
Tristan Nicholson,
Sam Parent,
Max Taylor,
Zach Thompson and
Jack Travassos each scored once for the Wolves.
Nicholson opened the scoring two minutes into the game off a feed from Thompson. Halliwell scored his first 37 seconds later to stake the Wolves to an early 2-0 lead.
Emmanuel scored with 10:45 left in the opening quarter before Osorio found the back of the net for his first score of the day at the 10-minute mark. Thompson, Reed, Osorio and Halliwell added a combined four goals to give Newberry a 7-1 lead after 15 minutes.
Westmoreland scored a man-up goal with 12:42 remaining in the opening half and scored again just over a minute later to push the Wolves' advantage to 9-1.
Halliwell completed his hat trick at the 9:30 mark and Westmoreland completed his with 5:18 left in the half. Reed netted his second of the game three minutes later, and Bukta registered his first goal of the 2024 campaign for a 13-2 halftime advantage.
Osorio poured in goals three and four in short order to open the second half, and Parent rifled home his first of the season with 10:35 to go in the third for a commanding 16-2 lead.
Travassos caused a turnover four minutes later and proceeded to score his first of 2024 off the turnover. Just 16 seconds after that – at the six-minute mark – freshman
Mason Kreller found fellow freshman Andrews for the Wolves' 18th goal of the day.
Taylor got his first collegiate goal with 11:14 remaining in the game and Reed closed the scoring on the man-advantage a minute later.
The Wolves outshot the Lions 46-26, including 37-13 on goal. Newberry won 22 of 26 faceoffs and picked up 15 ground balls to Emmanuel's three.
Ryan Erler, who played the first quarter, picked up his third win in as many games.
Newberry plays its home-opener this Saturday (Feb. 24) against Belmont Abbey. Faceoff is scheduled for 5 p.m.
