NEWBERRY, S.C. - Women's lacrosse (0-2, 0-0 SAC) drops their over time match to Lander (1-1, 0-0 PBC)Â 13-12 in a game where the Wolves trailed by three in the fourth quarter.
The Wolves excelled in the goal during the first half of the match held down by Kaitlyn Lamana who tallied seven. Lamana led the Wolves in ground balls collecting six followed by
Marissa Plumer with four. The Wolves defense led by captain
Madalyn Messersmith showed their true dominance in the second half. Messersmith and company held the Bearcats to five shots on net while causing 10 turnovers throughout the whole game. Plumer let the wolves in that with three caused, followed by Messersmith and
Adriana Hart with two.
The match starts with a draw control and that's where
Emma Jobs put on her best show. Jobs pulled in six draw controls, leading both the Wolves and Bearcats. Among her dominance she also scored one goal and one assist. She was among a pack of 10 Wolves who had at least one point. Captain
Heather Johnston led the offense in goals, claiming a hat trick off of four shots. Leading the Wolves in assists was the third captain of the pack,
Hanna Bond with two.
At the start of the fourth quarter the Wolves were down three, 10-7. In the first minute and a half
Ella Todd scored her first goal of the game off an assist from Plumer. After a fast answer by the Bearcats, the Wolves went on to score three unanswered. The first came from Jobs with her only goal of the game unassisted.
Trysten Burns found the back of the net three minutes after Jobs, scoring her only goal of the match too. The tying score came from Johnston off an assist from Bond with four minutes remaining in regulation. A minute and change later the Bearcats clawed their way back over the Wolves with just under three minutes remaining. With 44 seconds left in regulation, Plumer pulled off the impossible, registering a caused turnover and collecting the ground ball. With an immediate time out called, head coach
Tommy Kelly cooked up an offense scheme that was sure to send the match into over time. With a door stop tap in off an assist from Burns, Johnston recorded her final goal of the game sending the wolves into OT.
At the end of regulation the Wolves were next to perfect on clears, converting 15 of 17. The Wolves also beat Lander in draw controls converting 17 compared to the Bearcats 12. Although Newberry and Lander were even in ground balls with 19, the Wolves were more refined when it came to turning the ball over with Lander registering 17 turnovers, four more turnovers than Newberry.
The Wolves hit the road for the first time this season where they will take on North Greenville at 6 P.M. on Monday, Feb. 19.
