NEWBERRY – The Newberry College Baseball team had a four run fifth inning in their 9-7 non-conference victory over the Indians of Catawba.
The Wolves on the offensive end scored four runs from bunts by
Henry Gibson,
Jesse Free and
Bryson Nuckols.
Kade Faircloth,
K.J. Leshko, and Free each led the Wolves on the night with two rbis.
Wyatt Carey got the win in relief for the Wolves striking out two Indian batters in the top of the fifth inning. Sophomore reliever
Blake Morrison got his second save of the season for the Wolves.
Catawba got the first two runs on the board in the top of the first on two fielder's choice plays including a nice throw to the plate from Gibson to prevent the Indians from scoring a third run.
The Wolves would respond in the bottom of the second, as Free and Nuckols would both earn walks and advance to second and third on a wild pitch. On the same at-bat as the Wild Pitch, Leshko would rip a single up the middle to score Free and Nuckols to tie it up at two.
The Indians a run in the top of the third and fourth innings to extend their lead to 4-2. The Wolves would cut the lead to 4-3 in the bottom half of the fourth inning on a sac fly from Free that brought in
Henry Gibson who reached on an error.
The Indians would score in the top of the fifth on a rbi double to make it 5-3. That would be the last lead for the Indians. In the bottom of the fifth,
Donovan Ford would lead off with single and catch the Indian infield sleeping as Ford would steal second. Two batters later,
Jacob LeBron would score ford on a rbi-single, to make it 5-4. Two batters later, Faircloth would lay down a squeeze that would score two Indian runners on an errant throw to the plate, giving the Wolves a 6-5 lead. Faircloth would score on a Free single to make it 7-5.
Two innings later, the Wolves would score twice on sacrifice bunts by Gibson and Nuckols to make it 9-5.
In the top of the ninth, the Indian comeback attempt would fall short as the Wolves would win 9-7.
