JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – An 11-goal first quarter and 12-goal first half was plenty for the Newberry College men's lacrosse team in its season opener on Saturday afternoon, as they went on to claim a dominant 22-6 win over Lynn at Bolles High School.
The Wolves assisted on 18 of their goals to tally 40 points – a new program record.
Scott Reed tied the Newberry record by scoring eight times versus Lynn (0-2). Combined with his four assists, Reed set the new points record in a game for Newberry with 12.
Also adding to the record book was
Zach Thompson and his seven assists for a new Newberry record.
Jimmy Osorio scored four goals and
Baker Westmoreland had three to give a trio of Wolves hat-tricks.
Nathan Pouliot got the Wolves going early with a goal just 1 minute and 10 seconds into the 2024 campaign. The Fighting Knights responded in short order before Westmoreland fired home a goal to restore the lead on the man advantage.
Mac Ryan netted his first of the season with 9:54 left in the opening quarter to make it 3-1 before Lynn added its second. Reed poured in four goals over the final 6:09 of the first, and
Adrian Channell, Thompson, Osorio and
Connor Bates each scored over that stretch to give the Wolves a commanding 11-3 lead after 15 minutes.
Ryan scored his second of the day a mere nine seconds into the second quarter before scoring tempered considerably the rest of the half: Lynn added a goal with 12:45 left and the Wolves carried a 12-4 lead into halftime.
Reed tallied his fifth of the day a minute into the second half to push the Newberry advantage to nine. The assist was credited to Thompson – his third of the game to that point.
The Fighting Knights scored their fifth and sixth goals 41 seconds apart to bring it within 13-6 with 11:41 remaining in the third. Osorio scored three times, Westmoreland twice and Reed and
Miles Jones added one goal each over the final 9:45 of the quarter to make it 20-6 heading into the fourth.
Reed added Nos. 7 and 8 at the beginning of the last quarter for the final goals of the game for either side, with assists given to Thompson and Osorio.
In net,
Ryan Erler stopped 18 of 24 shots for an impressive 0.75 save percentage. As a team, the Wolves outshot Lynn 54-33, won 19 of 29 face-offs and scooped up 41 ground balls to their 17.
Newberry, who led Division II in man-up percentage a season ago, picked up right where they left off in that category by converting 5 of 8 opportunities (62.5%).
The Wolves return to action this Saturday (Feb. 17) for another game away from home. Face-off against Mount Olive is scheduled for noon.
