Box Score The Newberry College Wolves rallied from an early 11-2 deficit to grab the lead by the end of the first quarter and never trailed again in winning a tightly contested 60-52 victory at North Greenville giving Johnette Walker her first victory as a head coach.
Jess Tomkins scored 16 points, grabbed eight rebounds and blocked four shots to lead the Wolves to the road victory.
North Greenville scored four straight points to tie the game at 46 with 5:26 left in the game, but the Wolves put together a 9-0 run and outscored the Trailblazers 14-6 the remainder of the game.
Tomkins' jump shot and
Marykate Kent's 3-point shot were sandwiched between two layups by point guard
Jayla Cook to give the Wolves a 55-46 lead with 3:16 left in the game.
The Trailblazers responded with back-to-back 3-point baskets to cut the advantage to 55-52, but Tompkins hit another clutch shot with 50 seconds left and Kent added a pair of free throws with 28 seconds left to seal the victory.
The Wolves defense forced a turnover and held the Trailblazers without a point over the last 1:46.
Kent finished with 12 points, nine on a trio of 3-pointers, and
Nyah Vermeulen added eight points.
Cook finished with nine points, four rebounds, assists and steals.
The Newberry bench outscored the North Greenville bench 26-12 led by Vermeulen.
The Wolves' defense held North Greenville to just 34.5 percent shooting and outrebounded them 45-27 including 14-5 on the offensive end, leading to 16 second chance points to just three for the Trailblazers.
Newberry led 27-23 at the half despite trailing by nine points in the first quarter.
Newberry outrebounded North Greenville 24-17 in the first 20 minutes and held the Trailblazers to just under 31% shooting.
The Wolves forced 11 first half turnovers and their bench outscored the Trailblazer bench 17-5 in the first half.
The Wolves frontcourt combination of Tompkins and Vermeulen combined for 14 points, making 5-of-7 shots from the floor and seven rebounds.
Newberry went on a 22-6 run midway through the first quarter late into the second quarter to grab a 24-17 advantage.
After trailing 11-2 to start the game, the Wolves rallied to grab a 14-13 advantage at the end of the first quarter.
Newberry returns to the court Wednesday night at Augusta.
