SALISBURY, NC – Wolves Come Out on Top in Thrilling Five-Set Battle Against Catawba

 

OVERVIEW: NEWBERRY VS CATAWBA

SCORE: Newberry Wolves 3, Catawba Indians 2 (20-25, 25-14, 15-25, 25-19, 15-7)

RECORDS: Newberry (8-13), Catawba (4-20)

LOCATION: Goodman Arena – Salisbury, NC

 

HIGHLIGHTS:

    Set 1:

  • The Indians got out to a booming start taking an unanswered 9-0 lead.

  • The Wolves went on a run of their own after this, featuring two kills from Anna Schneider, lowering the deficit to 7-9.

  • A back and forth battle ended with Catawba scoring four straight raising their lead to 16-10.

  • The Wolves got within one point at 16-17, but the Indians were able to hold strong and end set one, 25-20.

    Set 2:

  • Things started out tight in set two with both squads tied up at 8-8.

  • The Wolves began to catch their stride taking a commanding 19-13 lead after an ace from Giovanna Ravanhani. 

  • Not letting up, Newberry closed out set two with a 6-1 run, 25-14. 

    Set 3:

  • Catawba started the set up 5-1, but were slowed down after another ace from Ravanhani.

  • Maintaining a nice lead, the Indians held a five point gap from the Wolves at 15-10.

  • Kills from Samantha Shaffer, Carole Ann Hussey, and Schneider kept the Wolves in it, but the Indians were able to hold strong and finish set three with a score of 25-15.

    Set 4:

  • A big block from Madison Watson and Shaffer stopped Catawba from extending an early lead. 

  • The Wolves grabbed their first lead of the set after a service ace from Annie Dill, taking control 8-7.

  • Kills from Kate Brown and Watson gave the Wolves some breathing room, leading the Indians, 14-10.

  • Going on a massive 8-2 run late in the set put the Wolves in favor with a new score of 22-12.

  • The Indians fought hard to stop the Wolves from forcing a fifth set, eventually closing their deficit to only five points.

  • Newberry held their ground and ended set four, 25-19 after back-to-back kills from Schneider.

    Set 5:

  • The Wolves came out swinging in the extra set, taking a huge 7-1 lead off the bat.

  • Switching sides with a Newberry 10-5 lead, the Wolves were ready to end this one.

  • Holding the Indians to only two more points, the Wolves finished the set 15-7, winning the match.

The Wolves will keep fighting late in the season, coming home for their next match against Mars Hill on November, 15th at 6pm.
