NEWBERRY – The Newberry College men's soccer team kicks off its 2023 regular season tonight (Sept. 5) at home against the Pacers of USC Aiken at 7 p.m. from the Smith Road Complex.
The Wolves' season was originally slated to begin on the road last Thursday (Aug. 31) against Flagler University in St. Augustine, Fla., but Hurricane Idalia forced its cancellation.
Scouting the Wolves
• Head Coach
Justin Cook enters his second season at the helm of the program, along with assistant coach
Zach Watson.
• The Wolves will be led by preseason All-Conference members
Harry McDonnell (Second Team) and
Ethan Orozco (Third Team). McDonnell had four goals and an assist a season ago.
• Newberry also returns its leading goal-scorer from last year, senior
Uriel Zarracan (five goals), as well as a pair of players who scored twice each last season in
Ferran Macian and
Filip Tmusic.
• In 17 games all-time against USC Aiken, the Wolves are 6-9-2 but won their lone matchup last year 1-0 on a goal from Zarracan.
Scouting the Pacers
• USC Aiken enters tonight's match sporting an 0-0-1 record after scoring two second-half goals to earn a draw with Belmont Abbey on the road last Thursday.
• Jose Rabadan and Lucas Pegorer scored in the 73rd and 75th minutes to even the score.
• In 2022, the Pacers were 2-13-1 overall, and 1-10-1 in the Peach Belt Conference.
