Track and Field Honored with 2023 SAC Championship Rings

NEWBERRY – During halftime of the football game this past Saturday at Setzler Field, two members of the Newberry track and field teams were honored for their efforts a season ago at the South Atlantic Conference Championships: Irma Watson-Perez and Kegan Crowell, also of the football team.

Watson-Perez took first place at the SAC Indoor Championships in February as a sophomore in the weight throw. Her 17.83-meter throw broke the SAC Indoor Championship meet record and was her first conference championship.

Irma was also the first Newberry student-athlete to hit a national qualifying mark and was recognized as one of five athletes to earn All-Region honors for the Wolves including Crowell, Sarah Abumere, Andrea Pascual Rivera and Tyla Stolberg.

Irma finished the indoor season ranked No. 27 in Division II in the weight throw, which is the highest ranking ever achieved by a Newberry Wolf. She concluded the outdoor season with a second-place finish in discus and a fourth-place finish in the hammer throw.

Crowell had a similarly historic season for the Wolves, becoming the first two-sport athlete to win SAC championships in both sports he competed in in the same year. It wasn't without grit and determination as Crowell persevered through a serious hand injury to capture his first SAC championship in the discus throw.

The winning toss of 47.75 meters came on his very last throw and engraved on the inside of his ring is the team's motto, "Last throw, Best throw." He also captured a fifth-place finish in the hammer throw at the outdoor championships.

Also receiving matching rings at the ceremony was Head Track & Field Head Coach Mashario Morton, who is entering her fifth season with Newberry and second as Head Coach. Coach Morton has played a key role in six of the seven SAC championships the program has had in the last two years, working with the throwers.
