WINSTON-SALEM, NC - The Newberry Wolves men's and women's track and field teams delivered a strong showing Saturday at the ASICS Sound Invite. With multiple top-five finishes, an event title, and a hurdles sweep on the men's side, the Wolves continued to build momentum in the heart of the indoor season.
Men's Highlights
The men's 60-meter hurdles proved to be one of the biggest highlights of the meet. Addison O'Cain qualified fourth in prelims (8.62) before winning the final in 8.34 to claim a first-place overall finish. Teammates Bryanna Thompson placed second overall (9.29), and Alexandra Thomas finished third overall (9.29), giving Newberry a dominant 1-2-3 sweep in the event.
On the flat track, Jamari Bennett placed fourth overall in the 60-meter prelims (6.95) and improved to 6.94 in the final. Stephone Scales finished eighth in prelims (7.03) and ran 7.07 in the final. Cohutta Brown placed 26th (7.36), followed by Kendall Parker in 28th (7.41) and Billy Bishay in 33rd (7.64).
Scales captured a first place overall finish in the 200 meters with a time of 22.12. Bennett added a 10th place finish in the seeded section (22.44). John Shivers was fourth (22.54), Landon Tucker finished 10th (22.78), Tavarian Thompson placed 17th (23.09), and  Jeremiah Hough came in 28th (23.83).
In the 400 meters, Tucker led the way with a second place finish (49.66). Thompson placed fifth (50.32), and Shivers followed in sixth (50.33).
In the 800 meters, freshman Jordan Kent placed 13th (1:59.26), just ahead of Tyler Shumate, who finished 14th (1:56.89).
Distance runners Jonah Wendland and Braylon Reier finished 30th (9:55.75) and 31st (9:59.10), respectively, in the 3,000 meters.
In the field events, Dwayne Weiters won the long jump with a mark of 6.68 meters (21-11.00), earning a first place finish. Billy Bishay placed eighth (6.11m), Kendall Parker finished 10th (6.02m), and Daytron Moorer was 12th (5.44m).
Dejon Barber secured a fifth place finish in the triple jump (13.29m). In the weight throw, Timothy Hartman placed eighth (14.94m). In the pole vault, Ryan Wright cleared 4.40 meters to finish fifth overall.
Women's Highlights
In the 60 meters, Leiyana Rose finished 21st (8.16), and Madalynn Williams placed 25th (8.72).
In the 200 meters, Alexandra Thomas led the Wolves with a sixth-place finish (26.06). Bryanna Thompson followed in seventh (26.54), while Kamryn Adderton placed 11th (27.04).
Nia Quimby finished 10th overall in the 400 meters with a time of 1:03.90.
In the mile, Olivia Hare placed 18th (5:26.51).
In the field events, sophomore Meah Jackson placed fourth in the long jump (5.28m). In the triple jump, freshman Eva Lubke earned a third place finish (9.97m), while Zakarah Powell placed fourth (9.40m).
In the throws, Adele Hillier secured a fifth place finish in the weight throw (11.96m), and Penny Eke placed eighth (9.16m). Hillier also finished eighth in the shot put (9.03m), with Eke placing 11th (7.29m).
Overall, the Wolves combined event victories, podium finishes, and numerous top-20 placements in a competitive indoor field as both squads continue their progression toward the postseason. The Wolves will return to action on February 20th at the Tyrone Invite in Mill Springs, SC.
