ANDERSON, S.C. – The Newberry College men's and women's track and field teams continued their impressive 2023 campaign over the weekend at the Electric City Invitational in Anderson. The men finished 3rd out of 25 teams, while the women earned a tie for 8th place, also in a field of 25.
Among the results for the Wolves, six school records were set or broken: three of those in field events, and three track events.
"Strong showing this weekend. We brought home six school records and snagged a couple of first-place finishes," said Head Men's and Women's Track and Field Coach
Mashario Morton.
"We haven't had the best weather conditions this season, so this meet was a huge confidence booster for us being two weeks out from the conference championships."
Morton added: "Our coaches have done a wonderful job preparing our student-athletes and I know the best is yet to come. We have one more meet until conference and we looking forward to continuing the momentum we have."
Kegan Crowell (Beaufort, S.C.) had an impressive showing at the meet, earning a pair of top-two results. His discus throw of 46.67 meters (153 feet, 1 inch) was one of the school records set, earning him second place, though that wasn't his best finish of the weekend. Crowell did one spot better – first place – in the hammer throw, heaving it 51.77 meters (169 feet, 10 inches) to beat 30 other men.
Sean Price (Summerville, SC) also earned a victory in Anderson, winning the javelin event with a throw of 49.01 meters (160 feet, 9 inches). Price's throw bested his closest competitor by over 10 feet.
"We are starting to find our groove and get back on track after a bunch of bad-weather meets,"
Jimmy Stephens, Director of Track and Field/Cross Country, said. "Our Coaching staff is doing a phenomenal job and our kids are always ready to compete.
"We are in the home stretch leading up to the conference championships and dialing in our training as well as trying to get a few student-athletes healthy."
Fellow javelin-thrower
Tyla Stolberg (Brisbane, Queensland, Australia) was another of the school record-breakers, throwing it 37.72 meters (123 feet, 9 inches) for a top-three finish out of 31 competitors. Stolberg is now first on the South Atlantic Conference Outdoor Performance List for the category.
Last week's South Atlantic Conference Varsity Gems Women's Field Athlete of the Week,
Savannah Jordan (North Myrtle Beach, S.C.), was right behind Stolberg with a throw of 34.94 meters (114 feet, 7 inches) for a new career-best.
Freshman
Zachary Counts (Summerville, S.C.) also earned a top-five result with his Newberry record-setting shot put heave of 14.05 meters (46 feet, 1.25 inches) against 36 competitors.
Senior
Emma Johnson (Clover, S.C.) set a new high-mark for Newberry in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 14.87 seconds to finish sixth. Johnson also ran the 100-meter dash in 12.17 seconds for a top-five finish and a new personal-best.
Alaya Lindquist (Loganville, Ga.) ran the 1500-meter event in 5:07.13 to put her name atop the women's record books while Larry Scott's 800-meter time of 1:58.96 is a new College record for the men.
Rounding out the fruitful weekend for the Wolves was
Andrea Pascual Rivera (Tarragona, Spain) in the hammer throw. Her season-best effort of 51.22 meters (168 feet) was good for second place.
"Newberry Track & Field is on the rise, and it is exciting to watch this team develop and grow," Stephens concluded.
