NEWBERRY, S.C. – A year after reaching the South Atlantic Conference Quarterfinals, the Newberry College men's lacrosse team is ready for action in the 2023 season. Playing host to Young Harris College on Wednesday night, Newberry will look to earn its first victory of the season in Game No. 1 under the lights at Setzler Field.
Scouting the Mountain Lions: Young Harris enters Wednesday's matchup having dropped their only contest of the season on Saturday at home to North Greenville, 19-10. Junior Wyatt Peek led the Mountain Lions with three goals in the affair while scooping up two ground balls. Tommy Chrizst and Colburn Connelly each added two goals for Young Harris, and a trio of others tallied one goal apiece. A season ago, the Mountain Lions finished the season 1-14 and lost in the first round of the Peach Belt Conference Tournament.
Scouting the Wolves: Newberry comes into 2023 looking to improve upon its South Atlantic Conference Quarterfinal appearance a season ago. Last year, the Wolves put together a 10-7 season with a 6-4 record in conference competition. The Wolves return their top four goal-scorers from 2022:
Baker Westmoreland (Charlotte, N.C.) had 46;
Curtis Bukta (Ontario, Canada) scored 39; and
Scott Reed (Ontario, Canada) and
Mac Ryan (Lake Villa, Ill) both fired in 38. Defensively,
Jack Travassos (Ontario, Canada) will look to build upon his team-leading 29 caused turnovers last season as a freshman. In their only matchup historically, Newberry dominated Young Harris 15-3 in Georgia last February.
