FLORENCE, S.C. – In their first match of their title defense at the City of Florence College Tennis Invitational, the Newberry College women's tennis team (4-0, 0-0 South Atlantic Conference) defeated the Mount Olive Trojans by a score of 4-0.
Due to the format of the tournament and restrictions due to court conditions, the singles points were played first, and the doubles point will only be played if necessary.
In the only portion of competition played in the match, the singles points, the Wolves notched four victories and swept the win.
Zulay Castaneda (Panama City, Panam) was defeated in the first set, 5-7, but bounced back to claim the second two sets, 6-4 and 6-2, to claim the first point for the Wolves.
Nastassia Chamoun (Reunion Island, France) dominated her opponent, winning in consecutive sets easily: 6-1, 6-1.
The other two Wolves to claim points in the match dominated in a similar way to Chamoun.
Aina Miralles (Barcelona, Catalonia) won in two sets: 6-1, 6-1.
Rosie Harfield (Lee-on-Solent, England) had just a bit more trouble with her opponent, still coasting to a 6-2, 6-2 victory.
With nothing else the Trojans could do to snatch victory from the Wolves, the match was called with two singles matches still in progress.
"The girls took care of business and I look forward to keeping up the level through the entire weekend," reflected head coach
Elias Fernandez on his team's performance.
The Wolves continue play at the Florence Invitational on Saturday, Feb. 4 at 11 P.M. They first take on the tournament's host school, Francis Marion University before facing another opponent yet to be determined.
