MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. – The No. 25 Newberry College women's tennis team (7-1, 0-0 South Atlantic Conference) suffered their first setback of the season on Sunday as they fell to the Georgia College Bobcats (4-0) by a final score of 5-2.
Redshirt senior
Zulay Castaneda (Panama City, Panama) and senior
Nastassia Chamoun (Reunion Island, France) took their double's match by a final score of 6-3, but they were last in the order of finish and the Bobcats had already secured the double's point by winning at the two and three.
The first match to finish featured junior
Ish Singh (Gurgaon, India) who fell to her opponent in two sets, 2-6, 1-6, at the three. Next to finish was freshman
Sofia Cardenas (Bogotá, Colombia) at the four who likewise fell in two sets, 4-6,3-6.
Chamoun secured the first point of the match for the Wolves by winning at the two. She first secured a close first set, 7-6, then dominated the second set 6-1. Freshman
Aina Miralles (Barcelona, Catalonia) won at the five with a two-set, 6-3, 6-3 victory to put the Wolves one point back of the Bobcats as the matches at the one and six continued into the third set.
The Bobcats secured their fourth point and the match as Castaneda fell in a back-and-forth match at the one, 5-7, 6-3, 4-6. Junior
Rosie Harfield (Lee-on-Solent, England) played down to the wire at the six, but ultimately fell to her opponent: 4-6, 6-4, 6-7. The Wolves fell to the Bobcats by a final score of 5-2.
The Wolves are back on the court Thursday, Feb. 23, as they host the Mars Hill Lions to open South Atlantic Conference play. The match is set to start at 1 P.M.
