WISE, VA – Despite leading for nearly 3 quarters, the Newberry College women's basketball team (2-6, 0-2 SAC) fell on the road to the Highland Cavaliers of UVA Wise 73-57 this afternoon at the David J. Prior Convocation Center.
The Wolves had three players score double figures on the afternoon. Sophomore guard
Deshona Gaither posted a career-high 12 points and had a stellar defensive afternoon with four steals for the fourth time this season.
April Rummery-Lamb posted 12 points and grabbed a team-high six rebounds on the afternoon.
Jess Tomkins had 10 points and grabbed five rebounds.
"It was evident that our posts had a size advantage tonight and when we got them the ball inside, good things happened. We didn't do a good enough job feeding them, and that's a credit to the UVA Wise defense" - Head Coach Joanna Tincher.
The Wolves took a 20-13 lead at the end of the first quarter as their defense forced five turnovers throughout the opening quarter. Gaither posted two of her four steals getting into the passing lanes.
The Wolves went back-and-forth with UVA Wise in the second quarter maintaining a 30-29 lead at the half.With 2:19 left in the third, Newberry led for the last time 43-40, before the Cavs went on a 22-9 run. It took a triple double performance by 5th year senior Caitlyn Ross to secure their first conference win.
The Wolves bench continued to outscore their opponents, outscoring the Highland Cavaliers bench today 13-10.
Caylin Moment led all bench scorers with six points total.
The Wolves come home this Wednesday as they will host the Saints of Limestone University in Eleazer Arena at 5:30 p.m.
