Wolves Use Explosive Second Half to Secure First Conference Win

NEWBERRY, S.C.- The Wolves (3-6, 1-2 SAC) defeated the Saints of Limestone University (5-4, 1-2 SAC) at home this evening for their first South Atlantic Conference win of the season 68-59.

The Wolves came out slow in the first quarter but quickly switched gears in the second quarter, scoring 17 points compared to nine in the first quarter. The Wolves were able to shrink the Saints' lead from 11 to five points going into halftime.

The Wolves tied the game in the third quarter 33-33 with the help of a three-pointer from Julia Paoletta. With a couple free throws from Jenna Yanity the Wolves held the lead of 45-43 going into the fourth quarter. The Wolves outscored the Saints in the second, third, and fourth quarters.

The team's offense erupted in the fourth quarter with 23 points while holding the Saints to 16 points. The Wolves gained 13 of their points from the free throw line shooting 72%. Sophomore Point Guard, Deshona Gaither, posted a new career-high leading the Wolves in scoring with 17 points and grabbed seven boards.

"Deshona has played really well for us this season, and is an elite defender, but we've been making an effort to take more advantage of her on the offensive end and tonight she capitalized on that." Head Coach Joanna Tincher said, "It's a credit to how much work she puts in outside of practice time."

Highlighting a defense effort by center April Rummery-Lamb, the wolves blocked a season-high eight shots in the winning effort. Rummery-Lamb collected five defensive rebounds, six blocks, and was the second highest scorer of the evening with 15 points. Rummery-Lamb's six shots are the most by a wolf this season.

After the competition Head Tincher, said "I thought our team not only tightened up defensively in the 3rd and 4th quarters but got out and ran in transition after getting stops and rebounds.  The posts did a great job on Kalisha Hill, holding her to 1 field goal tonight and I think that really frustrated Limestone offensively."
