NEWBERRY, S.C. - The Women's Basketball team (4-6, 2-2 SAC) produced a lock down second quarter in route to a 55-44 conference victory over the Pioneers of Tusculum University (3-6, 1-2 SAC) this afternoon in Eleazer Arena.
Wolves ended the first quarter trailing 12-9 but came out hot with a 14-0 run to start the second quarter where the Wolves outscored the Pioneers 21-2 to take a 30-14 lead into the half. Deshona Gaither and Payton Cronen would score a combined 10 points in the dominant second quarter while the Wolves out rebounded the Pioneers 22-9 throughout the quarter. "Our kids really locked into the scout and showed what they're capable of." Head Coach Joanna Tincher said. "We had all five players on the floor communicating at a high level."
The Wolves would take advantage of that second quarter as they would maintain their lead by as large as 17 points with just over a minute to go in the third quarter while exchanging buckets with the Pioneers. April Rummery-Lamb shined in the third scoring six of her 10 points in the quarter.
In the fourth quarter, the Wolves continued to attack the offensive glass grabbing seven offensive rebounds including three from Ryian Howard and scoring five points from those second chances. The Pioneers got as close as they trailed by eight points with 5:56 remaining in the game but the Wolves would maintain their composure and slam the door shut as they would out score the Pioneers 7-4 in the last five minutes.
The Wolves' bench continues to outscore their opposing benches as they outscored the Pioneers bench 15-9 tonight. "The Bench has been more productive as of late and that has helped us the last few games." Coach Tincher stated, "With having so many new players, it's taken a little time to gel. Ryian Howard has been figuring some things out and has been giving us great minutes off the bench. She created some big second chance opportunities for us."
Payton Cronen led the pack in scoring with 17 points followed by Rummery-Lamb with 10. Rummery-Lamb continued to put on another defensive show collecting three blocks. Jess Tomkins joined her with two blocks and pulled in nine rebounds. The Wolves out rebounded the Pioneers 49-45 behind 12 rebounds coming from Howard.
