Newberry Rises in Super Region II; Fields Takes Top Spot at 174 lbs In Latest Rankings

Wolves' big month sees rise in rankings while Fields becomes top 174 lbs wrestler in region

GREENWOOD, S.C. – The second Super Region II rankings were announced on January 17, and after over a month of action that would see Newberry go 2-0 in duals against King and Coker, leave with two individual placers at the Patriot Open, and finish 29th and 10th at the 43rd Midwest Classic and NWCA National Duals, respectively, the Wolves would rise to third in the rankings.

The No.5 Lander Bearcats would maintain its first-place spot, finishing first after receiving 96 points, No. 18 UNC Pembroke finishing second with 84 points, and Newberry rounding out the top three with 61 points.

Also, the list would include the first inclusion of a Newberry wrestler being ranked first in his weight class as junior Dayton Fields (Seneca, Mo.) would rise to the top spot at 174 lbs.

Fields would have an impressive run over the course of the month and a half, starting with finishing in the top 12 at the Midwest Classic that was highlighted by the upset victory over Hunter Haven of Limestone by a 9-3 decision, ranked #12 at the time. He would follow suit with a pin of Vincent Galang at 6:37 in the dual win against King before securing another upset win of Zeke Waltz of McKendree (ranked #4 at the time) at the NWCA National Duals in his last outing.

The Wolves will look to stay hungry in Super Region II as they prepare for South Atlantic Conference Carolinas members Emory & Henry and Limestone in a tri meet on January 18, starting at 4 PM, before turning their attention to the eighth ranked team in Super Region II and fellow SACC member, Emmanuel, in a home dual on January 23, scheduled for 7 PM.
