Offensive Outburst Boosts Wolves to 18-6 Series Opening Win Over Anderson

ANDERSON, S.C. – Returning to conference action after suffering a midweek loss, the Newberry College (28-7, 10-3 SAC) baseball team rebounded with a 18-6 win over the Trojans of Anderson University on Friday, April 1.  The Wolves scored in five of the nine innings in the contest including a nine-run outburst in the sixth.

Junior Joe LaFiora (Philadelphia, Pa.) pitched a six-inning gem for the Wolves on the mound, earning the win in his typical Friday start.  He allowed just one run over that stretch while striking out four. Sophomore Johnathan White (Simpsonville, S.C.) and freshman Brad Brooks (Mount Pleasant, S.C.) combined to close out the win for the Scarlet and Gray on the evening.

At the plate, junior Braylin Marine (Freeport, N.Y.) accounted for seven of Wolves runs on the evening as he scored two and drove in five as he went 4-for-5 at the dish.  Sophomores Henry Gibson (Walterboro, S.C.) and Jacob LeBron (Lexington, S.C.) each notched multiple RBIs with Gibson recording a pair and LeBron accounting for a trio. Freshman Jonathan Velez (Mayaguez, P.R.) posted two RBIs on the night as well while three other Wolves added a single RBI.

A lead-off walk and a single by senior Zane Tarrance (Odessa, Fla.) put runners on the corners for the Wolves in the top of the first. Marine recorded his first RBI of the day in the next at-bat as the drove the first run of the day in to give the Wolves the early 1-0 lead.  LaFiora would recover from a first batter hit to retire the next three batters and shut down the Trojans in the early goings.

The top of the second would continue the offensive work for the Wolves as they were able to put up four runs in the frame.  A pair of singles and a sacrifice bunt would bring around the first run of the inning before a wild pitch and a defensive miscue would combine to bring in the second run.  With two runners in scoring position late in the inning, Marine would record two more RBIs in the contest as he drove in the third and fourth runs of the inning to bring the score up to 5-0.

Again, the Trojans would get one runner on the base paths but would do nothing with it while the Wolves were able to add to their lead with another run in the top of the third of a sacrifice fly to open their lead up to six.  The fourth inning would be the first where the Trojans would hold the Wolves scoreless, but they showed their disdain for that feeling in the top of the fifth as they were able to put three more runs on the board.

Three singles and a pair of wild pitches would be strung together, sandwiched around a pair of strikeouts, to plate the three runs for the Scarlet and Gary in the frame and bring their lead out to 9-0. A defensive miscue would kick off the offensive attack for the Wolves in the top of the sixth inning, in which they would plate nine total runs.  The Wolves would record three straight runs through bases loaded walks before three straight singles and a wild pitch would plate the remaining runs of the frame and give them an 18-0 lead.

Anderson was able to scratch across a single run in the bottom of the sixth and then turn in five runs in the bottom of the eighth while holding the Wolves scoreless throughout the remainder of the contest, but it would be Newberry who would earn the win by an 18-6 final score.

The two team return to action tomorrow with a doubleheader on tap in Anderson, S.C. starting at 1:00 p.m.
