Tarrance's Grand Slam Helps Wolves to Series Sweep of Anderson

ANDERSON, S.C. – Returning to Anderson after picking up a win in the opening game of the league series against the Trojans, the Newberry College (30-7, 12-3 SAC) baseball team picked up two more wins in a doubleheader as they picked up wins of 8-7 and 12-4 on Saturday, April 2.

Redshirt-senior Dylan Brazell (West Columbia, S.C.) and freshman Ethan LeBron (Lexington, S.C.) each picked up wins on the day as Chinpire recorded his in the opening game and LeBron picked up his in the late game. Brazell rounded out the opening game, tossing the final two and two-thirds innings of the contest, fanning a pair. LeBron picked up his win in the nightcap going six complete innings while picking up a strikeout on the way.

Junior Braylin Marine (Freeport, N.Y.) recorded five RBIs between the two games while senior Zane Tarrance (Odessa, Fla.) notched five of his own. Sophomore Henry Gibson (Walterboro, S.C.) knocked in a trio of runs on the day while senior Ian Clements (Upper Marlboro, Md.) tallied a pair in the late game.

Tarrance would be the first base runner of the day for the Scarlet and Gray as he was pegged by the Trojans hurler and would find his way over to third on a stolen base and throwing error on the catcher.  Marine would trade places with him as he blasted a triple down the right field line that brought Tarrance home and plated the lone run of the inning for the Wolves.

Both squads would be unable to find their way around the bases again until the bottom of the fourth when Anderson was able to post a trio of runs on the board and take the first lead of the contest.  However, in typical Newberry fashion the Wolves would bounce back in the top of the fifth as they were able to plate a pair on a double by Marine and an RBI-single by Gibson that brought the game back level at three.

Anderson swung the favor back their way in the bottom of the sixth as they were able to post a pair of runs in the frame to take the lead 5-3.  But the Wolves would not go silent as they would post four runs in the top of the seventh off one swing. After a lead-off double, a walk and a single would load the bags for the Scarlet and Gray, Tarrance, who ironically leads the country in sacrifice bunts, blasted his first collegiate home run, bringing everyone home and giving Newberry the 7-3 lead.

Anderson again would bring the score level in the bottom of the frame as they were able to plate four runs of their own.  Newberry again responded in the top of the ninth as they were able to score on another RBI-single from Gibson that would bring around the winning run and give the Wolves the 8-7 win.

In the nightcap, it would take a few innings for the teams to find their footing offensively as neither team would score until the top of the third when Newberry would tally a trio of runs.  Tarrance kicked off the scoring with an RBI-single while Marine would pick up a pair of RBIs just a batter later as he knocked a single through the left side that gave them the 3-0 lead.  They would add an additional run in the top of the fourth off a wild pitch and the Trojans responded in kind in the bottom of the frame to bring the score to 4-1 at the end of the fourth.

A hard ground out in the top of the fifth brought around another run for the Wolves to increase the lead to 5-1 but the Trojans were able to plate a pair of runs in the bottom of the frame and pull the advantage back to 5-3. The Wolves would explode for a five spot in the top of the sixth as LeBron, Marine, Gibson and Clements were each able to record an RBI in the frame to take over the 10-3 lead.

Anderson plated a single run in the bottom of the sixth while the Wolves were able to add a pair to their overall tally in the top of the seventh to bring the final score to 12-4 and give the Wolves the conference sweep.

The Wolves return home on Tuesday, April 5 as they welcome in the Lions of Emmanuel College to the Smith Road Complex for a single game.  First pitch is slated for 6:00 p.m.
