No. 19 Wolves Take on No.15 Lenoir-Rhyne in Midweek Clash

Newberry faces their fourth nationally ranked opponent this season

Newberry, S.C. - In their fourth nationally ranked matchup of the season, the Newberry College men's lacrosse team will head to Hickory, N.C. to take on conference rival and 15th ranked Lenoir-Rhyne (LR) on Wednesday (Mar. 30). Faceoff is set for 7 p.m. at Moretz Stadium. 

MATCHUP HISTORY

Wednesday's contest will be the fifth meeting all-time between the two programs. Newberry is 0-4 versus Lenoir-Rhyne since the program began in 2018. 

MATCHUP PREVIEW

NEWBERRY


Newberry (7-3, 3-1 SAC) enters Wednesday's matchup ranked 19th in the nation with three straight nationally ranked opponents ahead, including LR (No. 4 Limestone, No. 6 Wingate). The Wolves average 15 goals per game which is good for fifth in the conference while holding opponents to just 11 goals per contest on the season. 

Newberry ranks first in the SAC in man-up goals with 23 through their first 10 games and second in man-down goals with one. The Wolves average 43 shots per game (6th in SAC) with a 35-percent shot percentage which is good for third in conference.

Sophomore Mac Ryan (Lake Villa, Ill) leads the Wolves in goals this season, netting 32 goals and adding two helpers through 10 games. Ryan also has five hat tricks on the year. Fellow sophomore teammate Baker Westmoreland (Charlotte, N.C.) leads Newberry in total points with 42 on 28 goals and 14 assists. Westmoreland is tied with senior Zachary Sunderland (Brampton, Ontario, Canada) for a team-high 14 helpers. 

Goalkeepers freshman Nolan Downey (Ottawa, Ontario, Canada) and sophomore Griffin Broad (Wake Forest, N.C.) rank second and third in the conference for goal-against. Broad is second with 38 goals allowed and Downey comes in at third with 45 allowed. 

LENOIR-RHYNE

Lenoir-Rhyne (7-3, 4-1 SAC) enters Wednesday's contest ranked 15th in the nation. The Bears rank seventh in the conference in goals per game with 13 while allowing opponents under nine per game (2nd in SAC). They ranked 8th in the conference for shooting percentage with a 29-percent average. LR also ranks 2nd in caused turnovers with 98 through 10 games. 

Toron Eccleston leads the Bears in scoring with 22 goals and nine assists for a team-high 31 points. Will Canata ranks second for LR in scoring with 26 points on 15 goals and 11 assists. 

UPCOMING SCHEDULE

The Newberry College men's lacrosse team returns home this Saturday (Apr. 2) as they take on fourth ranked Limestone in their second-straight conference matchup. Faceoff is slated for 1 p.m. at Setzler Field.
