HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. - The Newberry College men's tennis team (9-10, 0-5 SAC) wrapped up their trip to Hilton Head for the PTR Spring Tennis Fest with a 6-1 victory over Shepherd on Friday morning.
The Wolves started the match with an early 1-0 advantage with Christian Clair (Marshall, Mo.) winning by default due to the Rams only having five players available. This would also give Newberry an early edge by claiming No. 3 doubles by default as well. Leo Zancheta (Assis, Brazil) and Mateo Bivol (Bordeaux, France) would then make quick work of their opponents for a 6-0 win at No. 1 doubles point to give the Wolves the 2-0 lead overall.
In singles play, Zancheta would continue his strong day with a 6-0 6-3 victory at No. 3 singles. Enzo Blavignat (Bordeaux, France) and Luke Layton (Columbia, S.C.) would then help secure the match with wins by respective scores of 6-3 7-5 and 6-0 7-5. The Rams were able to get on the board at No. 2 singles after a hard-fought match against Lawrence Friedland (Cary, N.C.) that was decided by two points in a third-set super-tiebreaker, but Stratas Anastopoulo (Charleston, S.C.) was able to come from behind for a 2-6 7-6 [11-9] victory at the top singles position to give the Wolves the 6-1 victory over Shepherd.
The Wolves return to action on Tuesday, March 22 when they travel to face No. 34 Wingate with the first serve scheduled for 2 p.m.
